PAD For Group Account?

Post Sat May 22, 2004 7:48 pm

In January of this year I established a group account here for my Yahoo-based list, "Women Digital Photographers." Our members, I'm pleased to say, have been making enthusiastic use of our PBase galleries, and one member has recently suggested that we create a PAD gallery.

Since one of the primary reasons this list exists is to encourage our members to get out there and use their cameras as frequently as possible, the PAD concept has a lot of obvous merits and would be a natural fit for our WDP group.

However, after having looked through the wonderful PAD galleries-- and admiring a lot of truly remarkable work-- I'm still rather at a loss as to how to set up this sort of gallery for a group rather than an individual. The PAD galleries I've seen appear to all be done by individual photographers.

Are there any group PAD galleries? Does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about setting one up for a group, but still remain within the basic PAD framework?

I'd like to have a better idea of how to do this-- or know if it's even possible-- before offering it to my group as a project on which to embark. Any suggestions, ideas, assistance, or direction in this matter would be very much appreciated!

Thank you,

Shoshanna Moser

Hi,
hmmm... I think it looses it's purpuse if a group rather then a person doing the project.

Thw whole Idea is the discipline, skill improovement of everyday shooting and working in the digital dark room.

here some info on PaD:

I'm trying to think of the way :)
You can have each photographer shoot a picture a day of the week, or if you have a lot of photographers, once a month... but I still think the PaD project is a one man/women game.... you develop your own style, so to speak, people put you in their favorites becaouse of that style, that they like...

Good Luck !

Thanks for the PAD information links, and also for your views on the matter. Since the purpose of PAD, as you've described it, is essentially the same as the purpose of my group, I don't consider the two at all incompatible-- the problem was one of layout.

Fortunately, I think I found a solution to that at Faye White's impressive PAD, and so will at least be able to ask the members of my group if this is something in which they would be interested.

It isn't important whether or not anyone will add this particular PAD to his or her favorites, because the point of the exercise is to encourage our members to become better photographers, and that's something they do for themselves, not for someone else.

Our membership ranges from seasoned pros to raw beginners, but the one thing we all have in common is that we can continue striving to take better pictures tomorrow than we do today-- and the more we shoot, the better we'll become. The thing that appeals to me about the PAD concept is that it provides everyone an incentive to use her cameras every single day, and that's really what our list is all about.

I don't know for certain whether the idea will strike a chord with the group members-- the layout I have in mind, inspired by Faith White's gallery, will require quite a bit of daily maintenance and possibly more work than anyone is willing to put in, but at least now I can offer it to them.

Without the links you provided it's doubtful I'd have found Faith's gallery, and so you really did help me in finding a solution. And even if the idea doesn't fly with the group, the suggestion of it may provoke some members into beginning their own PAD galleries-- I may even do it myself.

So, again, thanks for your help. We'll see what happens!

Best wishes,

Hi Shoshana,

It's Ann, a mostly lurking member of your w_d_p group. I've been pading since September and it is a really wonderful way to grow, both technically and creatively. Perhaps the membership could use their member galleries (the ones within the w_d_p pbase account) to PAD? Or maybe a links page for PADing members (I know of a couple other w_d_p members who PAD already)? People PAD for a lot of different reasons but I do think that the result of PADing would be very compatible with your goals for w_d_p (which is a great group as well). Personally, I've found PADing to be worth every penny I paid for my own personal pbase space.

I'll be interested to see where you go with it. I'm hopefull my own participation in the group will increase this summer... time is so short sometimes. (sigh)

Hi Ann,

Glad to see you here! I hope you'll de-lurk soon and once again become an active part of the group-- you've been missed.

I like your idea about providing links to the individual PAD galleries of our members. If we go ahead with this, that should be part of it.

Unfortunately, PBase only allows one PAD gallery per account, and so we wouldn't be able to have separate PAD galleries within each member gallery-- there can only be one for the whole shebang. I now think that it can be done, but only if a small committee of volunteers will take on the job of maintaining it. I plan to bring it up tomorrow, and we'll see how much interest there is.

In researching the possibilities, I've come across such beautiful and interesting work that even if the WDP group doesn't go for the idea, I may start my own personal PAD gallery-- heaven knows I live in a photographer's paradise!

Now that I know this is a passion in which you indulge, I'll have to go take a look at your PAD gallery-- it's clear that this is something that can easily become addictive.

Hope to soon see you in WDP--

Take care,

Shoshanna

Shoshanna... you would LOVE pad'ing!! :) And your pad gallery would become one of the favorites quite quickly, I'm certain.

What if you made a main PAD gallery and then each individual had a PAD gallery within. you could each upload your PAD for the day into the main gallery and leave it there until you prepared to upload the next days. then you could move the old one into the individuals gallery.

i don't know how you have your galleries set up but i would guess everyone can load and arrange their own pics? if you do it that way, then everyone could be responsible for their own picture/gallery and someone would probably only be needed to keep an eye on things rather than have to do all the shuffling. and since they upload new images to the main PAD gallery, it would show up on the meta gallery.

kind of a confusing way, but you are right. its hard to think of a way to make more than one on a single account.
