WEEKLY INFORMAL CHALLENGE 105: "Ratio"

Post Thu Apr 12, 2012 4:03 pm

Weekly Informal Challenge number 105 is "Ratio" (Thanks again to Inga M. for this idea)

You pick how you end up at a 1:3 ratio for a panoramic image. 2:3 (4x6) is the ratio for most SLRs while 3:4 is the out of camera ratio for point and shoots. The 1:3 ratio can be accomplished by stitching images together or by cropping it out of a single original image. The idea is to come up with a subject and composition that is best presented as a horizontal or vertical panoramic.

Helpful hints:

(1) If you are stitching multiple images together, study the composition, meter the light throughout the area, manually set the exposure that works best and then shoot the images that will be used to stitch the panorama.
(2) A level platform (tripod, wall, etc.) helps make the stitching process easier.
(3) Avoid using wide angles lens perspective (anything under 35mm is more challenging) to capture the multiple images because the edge distortion is more difficult to align.
(4) If you are cropping from a single image try to compose splitting the down the middle long way or at least think in those terms as you are capturing the image.

Let this be fun and challenging. I'm posting early Thursday to give extra time to think about it and execute (and because I have a wedding to shoot this weekend).

“Simply look with perceptive eyes at the world about you, and trust to your own reactions and convictions. Ask yourself: "Does this subject move me to feel, think and dream? Can I visualize a print - my own personal statement of what I feel and want to convey - from the subject before me?” -Ansel Adams

I guess I'm the first. I hope I'm not posting too early since it isn't actually the weekend but I shot this for the challenge today. This is obviously cropped not a pano.

Hugin is cool open source software that will stitch almost anything, and give you some interesting results. All of my panoramas have used this software.

I stitched this image with the help of HP photosmart
I used two pictures to get an reasonable result

After I had done this I read a lot about ratio and golden ratio, but the subject is still not exactly clear to me.

A 1:3 aspect ratio would be an image that's 1 unit tall and 3 units wide (or vice versa). Likewise, a 2:3 ratio is an image that's 2 units tall and 3 units wide. Standard 4x6 photos are 2:3 ratio. Wikipedia has a fairly good write up on aspect ratio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_%28image%29

Think more of a panorama or a banner for a web page. Set your crop tool to 3in x 1in and clear the resolution box. This will make it exactly the right ratio for a long image. For vertical, do the opposite.

Btw, even if you didn't get the ratio thing which is understandable because it's not something people use a lot, you did a great job stitching those images together. I really can't do panos at all.

This is obviously a crop ........ I thought it worked out pretty well in a 3:1 aspect ratio.

ok mine was taken just now from my roof.. hope the neighbors didn't see me up there in my pj shirt
and sweat pants! LOL I'm feeling pretty rough with a sinus head cold thing and was wondering what
I could do in pan ratio.. I looked at the clouds and couldn't resist! 8 frames stitched in photoshop.

and the tilt is because my street goes uphill to the right, but I sure feel like my horizon is crooked LOL

I went for a vertical image...I shot the image at a diagonal then straighten it so got the black corners for some contrast on these artsy guitar cabinet pulls. info in description to artist's website.

My first panorama (okay, technically, my 3rd but the first 2 weren't as pretty!)
