BACK TO BASICS CHALLENGE 8 - USING THE ACTIVE SPACE RULE

Post Sat Aug 16, 2014 1:40 am

NOTE: THE BACK TO BASIC CHALLENGE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO EVERY OTHER WEEK TO ALLOW PARTICPANTS TIME TO FIND AND TAKE THEIR BEST SHOT
You now have two weeks to find and post your entry.

Back to Basics Informal Meet-up
Repeat after me: “I will not be a lazy photographer.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Using the Active Space Rule
What is the active space rule? This is the rule that says that you should always leave some breathing room around the subject–more in front than behind. Viewers need to have this space in an image because it feels uncomfortable to see a subject who is about to jump right into the side of the photo. We feel like there’s going to be a collision.
This is true even for subjects that aren’t moving. If a woman is looking off into the distance, then we add some space for her to gaze into, so she’s not looking at the flat edge of the photograph.
For some examples and more information on this Rule, please go to the website below.
IN THE NEXT CHALLENGE, OUR EXERCISE WILL BE BREAKING THIS RULE. :lol:
Your Assignment ~
Use Active Space in a photograph.
If you would like to discuss your experience, please do. We can learn from it.
Our goal is to get our best shot through the camera and not the computer, so please limit processing to basic adjustments.
Commenting - lets try to give support to one another and point out what we like about the resulting photo(s).
If you have criticism, keep it constructive and hide the comment.
Deadline to post for this assignment is Saturday, August 30th.
I took this of Ellie Saturday with your challenge in mind Lynn. Very unique challenge!
Note: This was taken with my Samsung S4 and only converted to B&W before uploading straight from my phone to Pbase.
