Printing pictures as large posters.

Post Thu Apr 10, 2008 8:24 pm

Printers recommend 200 pixels per inch to get a neat picture. How can I get 200 pixels per inch for a large poster of say 40” X 60”? Is a special camera required, or is there some software that can do this without degrading the quality of the image by interpolation.
I will be very thankful with any and all suggestions.

This is a good chart to give you an idea of megapixel versus optimum print sizes.
http://www.design215.com/toolbox/megapixels.php

A simple way to resize images to get the most from interpolation is to increase the original image in increments of 10%, i.e. resize by 10%, save (max resolution), resize by 10%, save (max resolution), resize, save (max resolution) etc., until you reach the size you need to match the print size you want. I've 'played' with the resizing using photoshop elements 5.0 and JPG and it worked very well for what I could see on my monitor. I hasten to add I didn't print the result, but it proved an interesting test.
