218th Show & Tell Competition: Pet Portraits

Post Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:14 am

Please help inspire me with images of your pets, I would mainly like to see "Studio Portraits" of your pets, But, All are welcome. Will be judgeing on Color, Lighting, And Composition /Placement. Would also like you to add information on how the photo was taken ( What kind of camera was used, What kind of lighting setup -flash, On camera/Off camera/unbrellas/filters/ Props, Window light, Natural light, Ect.)The Exif on my photos do not usually show up on pbase when I post, So in case your 's doesn't either, Could you post what setting you use if you can? ~thanks! Besides being an entered Portrait, It would also be a bit of a learning tool for me ( And I'm sure others) I know there are many beautiful pet photos here on Pbase, Lets see them, And see how "You" as the photographer, Make them stand out! Look forward to viewing all entries!

In both of these photos, I used Nikon D80-/Alien Bee 400 flash/Canvas Background/backdrop/crib matress with blanket throw, Unfortunately, I don't remember what the distance setting was I had on the camera at the time of the shots, But, I do know that the ISO I used was at 100 and the shutter speed was set at 1/125th sec., I believe the aperature was F8.

Tiger Cat, photographed outdoors under natural light. One of those images that I knew immediately would be great, when the subject/ artist are clicking. For the longest time it was the first image in Google when you did the search "Tiger Cat" and it's still one of the top images that pops up. I've gotten messages from people from all over the world about this image, so wild! It was done on my Nikon D70s, 1/30s f/4.5 at 52.0mm

When I did a reverse Google image search, I saw it was done in animation by someone!

Here's another natural light one, done with my Nikon D70s 1/250s f/5.6 at 46.0mm. I definitely think humor is great with pet portraits!

My third favorite- although I have so many more! Natural light indoors (I'm a big fan of natural light) Nikon D70s 1/60s f/2.2 at 50.0mm

Nikon D200 with Nikon 85 f1.8 lens, White Lightning Ultra Zap 800 (x2) equipped with 24x36 softboxes, White Lightning Ultra Zap 1600. Wiresless Strobe triggered by Pocket Wizard Plus 2. Black backdrop with halloween foam gravestones, artificial leaves, a blue filter for one of the strobes as an accent. Very little post processing, slight adjustment to the brightness of the gravestone to make it darker. Also finally used Unsharp mask to crisp everything up.

Nikon D200 with Nikon 50mm f1.8. Natural lighting from a door to the left. Sharpened

Finally... how about a family and pet portrait? Nikon D200 with 50mm f1.8. Two White Lightning Ultrazap 800's equipped with 24x36 softboxes. Wiresless Strobe triggered by Pocket Wizard Plus 2. Winter scene backdrop. Almost no post processing, just some dust removal, blurred foreground of backdrop, and sharpening
