Embedded SPAM Pop-ups?!?

Post Tue Oct 04, 2005 1:55 pm

I have been having something odd happen when I, or some of my guests, go to my main root page. A pop-up SPAM scanner thingy comes onto the screen and will NOT go away.

This is NOT good and I would like to know where it is coming from? Has anyone else had this happening?

Or go to http://upload.pbase.com/darter02/image/ ... 0/original to see the full size.

Hi Ron, just looked at your site (nice shots) using Netscape 7.1 (has built in popup stopper I think) saw no popup at all, tried firefox saw no popup but it did indicate in the upper bar that it had prevented a popup, IE 6.0 had the popup. Perhaps it associated with your http://www.webstats4u.com link, because I'm not sure how else they could modify your page?

Ron, I haven't seen this but I'm not sure what browser you use. Here's some links below for several free programs in case you don't have antivirus, and good firewall. Also, a program to help clean cookies, check your registry (just in case), and a program to block ads that's a bit better than what's in the browser. I've used all of these at different times, and they work pretty well. Just be sure to read instructions. And if you need to check with a computer group to find out for sure let me know, I can give you the address to one on the net. But as said, I don't know how it could be on other peoples computers too.

I have got the pop up in your root page.
It was about a product for weight loss, and written in Italian, my language.

I went through several of your galleries (Including Root) and didn't have a pop up of any kind either. Maybe someone will know more.

I have the same problem since nedstat changed into webstats4u. I hate it but I'm used to have a counter...

I had a screentop hijacker attack my computer. I don't know how it got in but I visit very few sites on the internet, this being one of them. I'm not sure if Pbase has a firewall on their server. And we'll never know so don't bother emailing them about that. :)

At any rate, it looked very similar to what you posted only instead of a pop up, it became my desktop.

The only program I found that could remove it was one called Xoftspy. I had to pay for it. No free trial but it advertised that it could remove hijackers that other spyware programs couldn't and it performed as advertised. I ran Adaware, Norton, AVG, and Spybot and none of them got rid of it.

I have since downloaded Firefox and installed a firewall on my computer. I get a lot of intrusion alerts while on Pbase, btw. It is a real nightmare to get rid of a hijacker.

To All

It seems that what I dreaded has come to be :( The counter NedStat, now know as webstats4u has been threatening to add pop ups it seems that they have done it.

Try removing your counter code and see if that helps.
For some reason I have not seen it on my pages yet

Well that stinks. Out of all my galleries with counters this is the only one I have trouble with. I just got another one a few seconds ago.

There have been several cases of the people who make the annoying spyware selling the spyware removal software that works for their own spyware... it's like the old protection racket game moved to your home PC!

I'm sorry, I left out a great program that stops these things realy easy. And it's a free one to make it even better.

When they pop up, just click it in the programs menu to add to the list and it's gone for good. :P

But isn't the point you don't want your visitors to see those
popups? To me, it's not worth it for the stats.

I feel the same way, that's why I use programs to stop these things. I often times run across galleries where people have counters added, and it slows the connection down too much and spoils my pleasure viewing. When one becomes that intrusive, I leave the galleries and most often won't go back. So if counters cost you views, and that's why you have them to track... it seems a bit couter productive to me.

Winpatrol is a very good application, and I was its fan for a long time. But now I use AnVir Task Manager . For me it is more useful than Winpatrol. Link: AnVir windows task manager
