The premiere issue of the PBase Magazine is now available.
Created entirely by members of the PBase community, this issue contains photography techniques from the experts.

Thanks guys. It looks really good.

Maybe some of the creators of the magazine can tell us more about how it came to be.

Guys - I have launced a PBASE Magazine thread in Q&A forum - please post and 'decode problems' or similar there. I don't want to crowd this thread.

Slug & Emily,

First off, we would like to thank you for all the back end hard work to help launch this magazine.

A bit about the folks who worked on the first edition:
    * Gary Paai - pbase cover artiste' extraordinaire (http://www.pbase.com/gpaai)

    * Larena Woodmore - PDF conversion [its surprisingly painful to convert word documents to PDF successfully !] (http://www.pbase.com/larena)

    * Wanda Bates - she doubled both as a model as well as the proof-reader for the first edition (http://www.pbase.com/slowpokebill)

    * Arjun Roychowdhury (me) - the guy who was a general pain in the bu** for all of the above

How it all began...

Well, it all began when I first saw Gary's PBase Magazine 'spoofs' at http://www.pbase.com/gpaai/covers. A small discussion in dpreview a few months ago
here was all it took to get started.

I contacted Bill to feature in the first edition and ofcourse, Gary to create the magazine cover. Both agreed on very short notice. Being short on money ($0 to be specific), I asked Bill if his lovely wife could also double up as a proof-reader - again, Wanda agreed in a jiffy. Larena offered her help to do the PDF conversion.

Thats all. From then on, we got cracking, with interview layouts, contacting photographers and other authors to belt out this first edition. At the same, while Gary, Wanda and Larena worked fervously on the magazine parts, I was busy bugging the heck out of Slug and Emily to get some backend changes done in time for the magazine launch (PDF uploads, tracking etc)
I must say, they were really helpful. [Just a side note: I still think Slug and Emily are really one person - they almost alternated in responses. I'll figure this out, eventually !]

Lessons Learned (and still learning)
    * Never use microsoft word for the original layout. Its painfully pathetic.
    * Moore's law: If some can go wrong, it will go wrong.

Well, enjoy !

I've tried to view the pdf, then I tried the zip version still no go. I updated my AR5.0 with the lastest updates for that version still no go. Went to get AR 7.0 that doesn't seem available for win98se but I tried the 6.01 version and that worked. So I finally got to see it but it would be nice if you posted it as an earlier version so more people could just open the file. It didn't seem to contain any features that were beyond the capacity of version 5.0.
I was reluctant to upgrade as I had the full pay pro-reader/writer version of 5.0 and didn't want to upgrade to a later non-pro later version, or buy the lastest pro- version.

And those of us running Linux are limited to AR 5.0.10.... (just double-checked the Adobe site)

KGhostView says it can't open the file and Xpdf asks for a password. What is it? (After clicking "Cancel", Xpdf spits out an error message about an unsuppported version of security handler.)

Sorry everyone - I didn't realise so many people were limited to versions prior to 6. I'm working on this now so there should be a version compatible with version 5 or maybe even 4 (just in case) soon.

Update - the new one should work with 5 & above, but won't work with 4 so I hope no-one's stuck with that version.

Thanks Thomas :-)
I realized the 'Moore' mistake the moment I posted it - but it seems PBase does not allow changes to posts in this forum. It was only a matter of time before someone caught it !
