I have to admit I was frustrated with PBASE in the past with slow response time and site being down unexpectedly but I am so far very satisfied with the site the last few weeks when building new galleries. I am willing to give it anothe year and let's see how it goes from here. $2/month will not make me broke.

Switching to Flickr...

Post Sun Nov 27, 2005 4:33 am

After using Flickr for a few months PBase feels about as shabby as Havana. Lots of pretty colors but the place is rotting, nothing changes, its old and primitive. And its run by newly wed tin-pot dictator too absorbed in new found matrimonial bliss to bother with PBase user's needs. I hope more people switch to Flickr, and don't forget to tell Slug about it.

From what I have seen it's the easiest and best way to share your photos with others...

From Flickr TOS

Flickr is intended for personal use and is not a generic image hosting service. Professional or corporate uses of Flickr are prohibited

From Yahoo! TOS (Who now owns Flickr)

You also understand and agree that the Service may include advertisements and that these advertisements are necessary for Yahoo! to provide the Service

And finally Yahoo picture search .. Now all your items are handily itemized for being stolen.

PBase is not perfect .. but flickr is not the answer for me (3 strikes and I only looked for a few minutes).

Take a look at smugmug. They have none of the issues of flickr.

This is the funniest reply I've read in this thread, LOL!

  • Why wouldn't a company want to protect it's finanacial interest by not allowing Professional or corporate use? Makes good business sense to me.
  • Using Yahoo as a source for what Flickr's policies are, is as crazy as comparing ESPN's policies to it's parent company, Disney.
  • Flickr has been purchased by Yahoo. Yahoo wants Flickr to continue make a profit, nothing else. There is absolutely no reason for Yahoo to interfere with how Flickr runs as long as it returns profit.
  • Flickr is not Yahoo, just owned by Yahoo.

garage_logician,

Hmm.. I always assumed that smugmug didn't allow nudity but, after the recent problems that have come up with self-appointed morality police here on pBase, I looked again at smugmug's policy and I think I would fit right in. Nudity is not frowned upon there, and while they don't have a "popular photos" section, they don't seem to filter nudity from their public areas.

Since I have a few bucks to spare, I'm going to test the waters and subscribe to smugmug as a power user for one year. If after that year, the service is better, meaning they can be something that pBase is not, then I'll stay with Smugmug.

Otherwise, I'll renew pBase for another 3 or so years. i'll let you know how it goes, if anyone is interested.

My PBase account is due in one month...
...and really not decided what I'll do about it.

Meanwhile I suscribed SM Power User one month ago.
Had two questions at different moments and got answers within 30 minutes.
Satisfied with the numerous features and professionnal service.

Smugmug's Terms of Service

Post Wed Dec 07, 2005 2:35 pm

NUDITY

Smugmug must remain a safe site for families with children, so we prohibit the uploading and display of photographs or other Media portraying explicit nudity that would be unacceptable in a public museum where minors visit, for example. If your photos would only be suited for adult sites, adult magazines, or R-rated movies, they are not suitable for Smugmug. Judgement of suitable Media is the sole discretion of Smugmug, and Smugmug reserves the right to delete any photographs or other Media it deems to violate this policy and/or to cancel the account of any subscriber who posts photos or other Media violating this policy.

Sure, Ray. Go on over there. Plunk down you money. I think I'll go there too and make sure they enforce their Terms of Service.

This just proves the point, that you aren't content in your existance unless you are prying into the affairs of others.

However, I have written Smugmug, provided a link to my "Veneris" image (in context with the others in my pBase gallery) and asked them outright if they have a problem with it. I will solicit a specific answer that is legally binding so that I can use it (and I am not afraid to litigate) if they try to backtrack on their reply that the image either is or isn't acceptable under their policy.

It seems the legal system is the only way to deal with people like you and, since the image I posted is not illegal. We'll see who has the last laugh.

I have just renewed for another year. It would seem that Gods appointed censors here on earth will follow you around where ever you go. Although I have no nude photos, I have not viewed anything offensive here. There are many other places where folks can see rude crude images. PBase continues to be my site of choice.

I have started a gallery of my grandson's photos and if he were to see nude photos on PBase, I would be happy to sit with him and explain the difference between nudity and porn, and good and evil, and censorship and freedom.
