Wow, I don't know when I've seen such a blatant disregard for Lee's rules.

A photo taken 9 months ago was clearly not taken with this challenge in mind.
A photo was posted instead of just a link in this thread.
And I don't care where you live, it's not Thursday anywhere in the world, yet.

Bev requested everyone to only post one photo. Adalberto_tiburzi, you should post a second photo so you can be just as inconsiderate of her as you were of Lee.

Adal,

At the risk of being rude...did you read Lee's request for the Thursday Challenge at all? He said:

The idea here is to go out and shoot something brand new that you think fits the challenge for this week. Pulling something out of the archives totally defeats the purpose of the "challenge". And posting on Tuesday rather invalidates this as a "thursday" challenge.

without wishing to sound too aggrieved, the original idea of the weekly challenge between myself and Bev was to stimulate new photo ideas. For most of us it is a lot of fun to do this.

We both appreciate that there will not always be the opportunity to take a photo for the challenge, but we would both like you all to honour the spirit of the challenge if at all possible.

Thanks!

Sorry if my initiative has been misunderstood.
I am out of this contest, I just wanted to wish the participants "Bon Appétit", Good Appetit with this starter ("hors-d'oeuvre" means "out of the meal" in French), as my caption clearly says.
PS
And yes, when I took this photo 9 months ago I had this challenge in mind.
I have many things, in my mind, you know.
In faith.

Where's your sense of humor, if I may ask? Seems to be a severe case of Transatlantic misunderstanding...

Lee, I'm not kidding now.
I really do believe you should introduce your challenge with this photo of yours,
as an example of the possibilities of that concept, and probably of how the idea of "Out of the Orient" was born...

Let's all lighten up! Pbase is supposed to be fun, eh?

Let me be honest, I live in the middle east, there is no chinatown here, so the chances of me getting a decent oriental photo within the next 12 hours is on the dismal side. I could perhaps put together a corny macro composition on chopsticks, but I would prefer to post something that I took last month when I was travelling (and which has not been posted on pbase yet) and which I think reflects the theme of the challenge better!

So, while I do respect the spirit of this challenge, I am hoping that I don't get comments from irritated pbasers. This is not a competition, no one gets a best prize, and with respect to the spirit of the challenge, I am hoping that there is some room for flexibility and that if I stick to 2 of the 3 rules, I will be forgiven!

Have a good day!

I agree with Azlin, it has to be fun and sometimes strict rules are hard to be followed. Let's be flexible Very Happy

The whole point of the Thursday challenge is to think outside the box and come up with something that is your interpretation of the idea. Anyone who has been to the orient can submit a picture and meet the challenge, but that's not the point. If everyone takes the above stance then the point of the challenge becomes a farce. No matter where you are some lateral thinking will produce a result, that's why the ideas are what they are. You never see ideas like your pet, your children, your car for exactly the reasons you are concerned about, i.e. not everyone can take part.

There are plenty of other challenges ongoing, so if you feel you cannot meet this one then don't participate on this occasion.

The point of the challenge is to make you think about an idea to meet the challenge. If everyone takes your stance then everyone will feel able to meet it, post a picture and I guarantee the increased numbers of people taking part will result in the challenge reducing to nothing.

It is Lee's challenge, and out of respect for Lee's hard work, choose to meet the rules or choose not to take part until you feel you can.

I feel this discussion is already putting a sour taste on the point of the exercise and as such already feel I won't partake.

I for one would like to thank Lee, as I know the ideas are not easy to come up with and the point of the exercise is fun, which I have had up until now.

Well, very few of us are in easy reach of any Chinatown, but I'm not making that an excuse. I know for a fact that the promoters of this challenge do not live in any big city but I doubt that will stop them from coming up with the goods.

I'd rather people try and think laterally and come up with something novel taken on the day rather than dig out your last picture showing a chinese restaurant or a pair of chopsticks.

Please remember the challenge is not just about China.

I totally agree with Ray.
As I stated in my previous post, I consider this image of Lee Rudd

http://www.pbase.com/reddishtiger/image/43942857

a complete, excellent representation of the possibilities of that theme
(whose title is not "In the Orient", but "OUT of the Orient" by the way...).

If you are stuggling to find inspiration, check out this link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriental

The word "orient" itself is derived and has meaning ("rising sun") so there's one idea for you!!

Think laterally!!
