Poor pictures from Coolscan IV + Nikon Scan

Post Sat Jun 25, 2005 9:35 am

I'm scanning some color negatives using a Coolscan IV ED and Nikon Scan 4. I'm getting some mottled streaks on the pictures.

Here's a sample of some cute penguins (256k)

Any ideas? I'm set to Calibrated RGB, with Digital ICE set to on (Normal).

That looks to me more like a defect on the film itself, rather than a scanner artifact. Can you examine the film more closely to see if you can see the effect?

I agree - looks like moisture residue.

Yes, drying marks from processing. Should be on pretty much all the film of that roll ? If that is the case, you could try simply re-washing the film in luke-warm water with v little washing-up liquid. Use a squeezy before putting out to dry.

Hi,
Your URL goes nowhere, but I have used the Nikon CS IV for a couple of years now and just love the results - it's a little slow to use but a hell-of-a-lot faster than then the darkroom used to be. LOL
I'd like to see the pic in question though to see if I ever came across this problem.

Not necessarily.
Take a look at this one, taken on the grand canyon.

I'd say it got quite well even though I was using Coolscan IV
