scanning problem

I have a UMAX AStra 4500 scanner.
I installed the scanner, but when I try to scan it says:
"An error has occured during preview. If the scanner is being used, please wait for it to complete the task, then try again"

The scanner works on another computer, but I need it functional on this one. The operating system is Windows XP, Sp2.
Do you have any ideas what to do to solve this problem?

Are the new and old computers using the same OS? I know Nikon's Coolscan has problems when run on Windows98, but works well under Windows XP. Barring that, I'd try contacting the manufacturer.
