Film --> Digital

I am new to photography. I would like to buy myself a decend used film camera. But before I buy one I have a question: what does it take to get the images from film to digital format so I can edit and store the
images on my computer. Do I have to buy expensive scanner or software to do this? Could it be done in photo studio? I will bring the film to a photo studio and get the copies of scans on flash memory. How expensive this could be?

Any comments and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Most commercial labs will give you negatives and a CD of the negatives at the time you develop. The cost is not usually that much (additional) since most labs digitize the pictures already before they print.

For example http://www.extrafilm.com.au/film.aspx charges about the same for a digitized run as for 4x6 prints.

I'm using a Epson Perfection 2400 flatbed scanner and it does a pretty good job........for a flatbed. You can find it for around 180$ at amazon.com. To have a better idea you can check some of my scans.

I tryed to get my stuff scanned by some commercial labs but no success. Images were flat and not very sharp.

If you can spend a bit more go for any Nikon film scanner you wont be desappointed.
