Well, I joined the MF club

Post Wed Oct 20, 2004 7:56 am

I just recently acquired a Rather well used 1938 Roleiflex Automat1, with Tessar 3.5 lens, took the first roll for developing and kept my fingers crossed. Apart from a couple of shots (my fault, didn't check the light metre) they came out very well indeed, information and contrast is brilliant, although there are a few tiny cleaning marks on the lens they don't show up at all on the prints (which are much better than the download). All I want now is a lens hood, for those odd sunny days.
All in all I'm well pleased. Image

One photo here from the first roll.

Is that image a scan of a negative or of a print?

No just asking -- I have tried both too and not sure which one works best...

Nigel.

If you read the post from Jamesbogue about the Mamya C330, I also mentioned a thing or two about the light factor. It seems that with B/W film in particular, the downloads do tend to be much darker than the actual print. I'm not much of an IT man myself, but I do believe that the JPG compression has something to do with this, unless somebody can prove me wrong. But what do I know. Image

Might also be a colour space issue. I think I read somewhere that for best results in a browser even B&W images should use the sRGB colour space rather than greyscale.

Nigel.

I have also been reading about it. I didn't know that HP had an option in its configurations menue to convert to sRGB format, so I tried it. I still had to do a little bit of mucking about with the scan in P/S, but it looks a bit more like the original print now, see what you think.

Looks better IMHO. Also you can change colour space from within PS after you have scanned the image.

You are too generous -- I am by no means an expert. Here is the entry on colour space from the DPReview glossary:

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Digital_Imaging/Color_Spaces_01.htm

What I do know for sure is that for proper display in a web browser an image should use sRGB as browsers do not understand any other colour space.

There is an excellent book on colour management by Tim Grey called Color Confidence: The Digital Photographer's Guide to Color Management available from Amazon etc.

With the image open: Image Menu -> Mode -> Convert to Profile then select sRGB IEC61996-2.1 from the drop down menu in the Destination Space section. Click OK to execute.

Thanks Nigel.

This was the first roll, and I suppose I was expecting a bit too much. I just have to take a bit more care with the exposure next time, and make sure I set my light metre properly. Oh well, here's to the next roll.
