Where is the best place on line to buy?

Post Mon Apr 10, 2006 12:44 pm

Hi all,

I haven't bought any gear over the net but am considering it now. I am interested in people experiences.

Cheers

B&H is always fine in their dealings, and I just purchased a flash from another store that was the best I've dealt with so far:
Galloway Camera http://www.gallowaycamera.com
The best thing, you can get them on the phone in a few rings if you have questions. Other places like B&H are almost impossible to reach by phone. But I'd compare prices depending on what you need.

Revised List, all delivered as promised with product as described:
KEH *see note in my later post
Adorama - No problem, but have only purchased from them once
Tiger Direct - No Problems, excellent for computer related products. They will often split ship so items come different days. Excellent source for deals if you'll watch for sales.

Another vote for B&H
Ritzcamera (so-so prices but the free shipping/no taxes makes up for a lot)
Abe's of Maine (But a warning that some of his stuff is grey)

Adorama has provided me good service. But I have seen others report problems.

I am a big believer in http://www.resellerratings.com also.

I have to vote B&H as well. Pretty much my whole rig has come from there with the exception of one lens I got off Ebay. In fact, I placed an order with B&H yesterday for two new lenses and had confirmation that they had shipped in my e-mail this morning.

You can sometimes find things a bit cheaper than B&H if you look around so far they have the best balance of price and service I have found anywhere and I have been doing a lot of looking the last couple of months with Minolta's announced departure from the digital imaging world.

B & H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
They are closed on Jewish holidays so between April 12 - 20 they won't be doing business.

Another vote for B&H. I like the ease of navigation of their website too.

Another vote for Adorama as well. They are my back up when B&H doesnt have an item im looking for or is too costly.

In no particular order, I like:
B&H
Adorama
KEH

For used: KEH

I've purchased most of my things from KEH since they're only about 10 miles from me. The ONE problem that I really have with them is their return/exchange policy. There's been a couple of times I needed to exchange something because it wasn't working properly. They want you to re-purchase, and give a refund. A refund can take 30 or more days. But for used, no one has their amount of inventory. And most times it's checked, & does work okay. If you can go the extra, buying new from them or B&H and you'll not be disappointed. jmho

another bump for adorama: I ordered two circular polarizing filters a while back and they sent me two UVs instead. I emailed them about the error. They sent me the polarizers the next day by overnight and let me keep the UVs. Now that is what I call customer service!!!

Man, if anything should be a sticky this one should. I was asking the same question a few weeks ago. I like to see people list stores other than B&H. I like them as well and love their website, BUT...the problem is everybody uses them (this goes for things other than photo gear also) and therefore they seem to get back ordered on many items. No big deal, except that when you really need the product, you have no other place that a lot of people suggest as a trusted source with competitive prices. So, I love to hear from folks that have bought from any of the other slew of stores on the net to help me make a sound decision.
For instance, if you trust http://www.resellerratings.com/ then you might want to give http://www.17photo.com/ a shot. They are rated better than even B&H and yet even on a search, I have never seen so much as one person suggest that place on the forum. Has anyone had any dealings with this shop? I'd love to see some feedback from an actual user we can ask follow up questions to, as opposed to the users comments on resellerratings. If anyone has, please post here.

I've used them through ebay .. good company been around since before the web so that does mean something. I have never found their prices to be that good, by the time you add shipping they are usually right at list price.

But occasionally they do come up with a toy that I can't do without.

Can you give an example of their shipping charge vs. say B&H?
The reason I ask is that I was pricing a Nikon D50 w/kit lens and their price is lower than B&H, KEH.com, and Adorama.com. Only Abesofmaine.com was cheaper, but they are not rated very well on RR.
