dslr vs mirrorless

Post Tue Dec 27, 2011 5:16 pm

I have a d700 + 14-24mm lens and am very satsified with the image quality and performance. It is big and conspicuous, making it awkward for candid street work. So I want to buy a smaller digital with excellent image quality. Leica m9 is beyond my means. Dslr nikon d7000 and pentax k5 are possibilities. The camera industry seems poised to develop advanced mirrorless cameras such as sony nex-7 that may may make dslr obsolete. Is mirrorless the way to go or stick with dslr?

I have the D700 + 14-24 f/2.8 as well, and it's very conspicuous, as is the the 24-70 f/2.8 which I use even more. Therefore I decided to buy a point and shoot a few months ago and got the Nikon Coolpix P7100 after seeing some photos fellow PBasers posted. I must say the image quality is very good and I am satisfied with the camera. With some many people using point and shoots it is inconspicuous, it's also light in weight and and it slips easily into your pocket. At $450 the price was right. Check out some photos taken with it here.

I have the same kit D700 + 14-24 and it really does stick out like a sore thumb..... Last year I opted for the P7000 you can see a small gallery of my images here http://www.pbase.com/impalass/nikon_coolpix_p7000
This has now been replaced with the P7100 Walter has. I was very pleased with the images from this little and my first P&S camera. It even captures RAW but a little on the slow side.
I have friend that just picked up a Nikon V1 set while i'm impressed with the image quality and how fast it works it's not all that small, uses a new type Nikon flash and the kit with body, 2 lens's and a flash was close to $2500.00 with tax. It still will not hide in your pocket very well may as well pack your DSLR... :-)
I can get my P7000 into places were my DSLR can't go and you can turn off the fake shutter sound so it's noiseless.
Let us know what you get.

Cheers..Mike
