After looking at the comments on the Indian basket detail, I thought that I would show an image of the actual extration. Native American cultural resource management staff were on the site and did the actual extration. We worked within their cultural traditions. This makes archaelogy interesting and fun. The basket will be returned to the Native Americans when their museum is built. The Indian casinos will fund the museum. All items found belong to the tribes and will be in their control.
The type of archaeology that was used is called wet archaeology. This is because it is performed in rivers, bays, and other water areas. Notice the hose nossel used as the tool used for removing the mud. The mud actually perserves the materials. After extraction, the basket was placed in water until it could go to a lab.
