Is there an FAQ?

Post Wed Mar 26, 2008 1:10 am

Hi, I'm considering trying a PAD gallery for the month of April.
Is there an FAQ that describes the process includes do's and don'ts?

With thanks!

There aren't really any rules to PADing, but those truly doing a PAD appreciate genuine effort and genuine posting of your efforts for that day. Most people set their own rules with a view to playing fair to the PAD community. There are also a great many others who use the PAD gallery as a show and tell. If you're going to post a PAD shot, then only post one a day, or post several in quick succession so only the latest shows in the PAD galleries. Also don't bump pictures to keep them at the top of the PAD gallery. You get out what you put in, so if you comment on other peoples efforts then you'll likely also get feedback.

The basic rules, are do what you want but make sure you enjoy yourself and get something out of it.

Below is a quote from the PAD galleries at http://www.pbase.com/pad

"These are the most recent uploads to Photo-A-Day galleries.
Many people have been working to take a new photo every day. This page is a quick way to find today's activity.
Choose your current PaD gallery by clicking the link at the bottom of the edit gallery page.

You can have just one gallery selected as a PaD gallery. This prevents abuse of this page.
Otherwise people would set all of their galleries as PaD galleries which would make this page less interesting.
Please play fair and don't try to monopolize this page by uploading a new photo every five minutes."

For what they are worth here are my own PAD rules, based on what I saw of others when I started.

One picture per day posted to my PAD gallery. I am aiming for a whole year of PAD. I try and post the picture the day it was taken if at all possible. I started PAD to try and improve my photography, so I try to cover as many subjects/styles as possible. For example, I try and avoid too many pictures of my ever present cats unless (1) they are doing something really worth shooting or (2) I am very, very, very stuck for an image that day :) Having said that, I've seen some great galleries where people have restricted themselves to a specific topic for a month e.g. b+w.

I try and find time each day to browse the recent PAD stuff, Dave's link below, to see what others have been doing. (Not all the images are PAD, some people just seem to use it to 'promote' everything they shoot.) I also make a point of leaving feedback (and voting) when I see something I like as, personally, even a single comment/vote on one of my images gives me the impetus to keep going on the days when insipration is on holiday :)

Good luck and be warned, PAD is strangely addictive :)

I can agree with that, but managed to drag myself away kicking and screaming after a straight two years of PADing.

Yes, you did. With the statement that you were going to take a break for a month. Dude, it's been almost three! When are you going to start shooting again?

Miss your work.

Thank you all for your posts and insight. The idea of doing a PaD gallery somewhat intimidating ... don't know if I can committ to that yet or not. We'll see.
In any case, it's certainly something to strive for!

It doesn't have to be intimidating. Just remember it's a great way to stretch your mind and consider so many things you probably wouldn't normally think to shoot.

I'm just posting this in response to Bob and Scott.
