Sima 170-500 vs. 70-200

Anyone have an opion on the lens i should get for bird watching if it is mostly from within 30 ft., sometimes down to about 5 ft. around my backyard feeders. Was convinced the 70-200 was what I needed till read lots of threads indicating that I needed a longer lens? I thought the 2.8f would be and advantage, but now am not sure........thanks all. This in conjunction with my new D80
