Depth of Field

Post Thu Apr 12, 2007 4:38 pm

This might be a stupid question...but I'm gonna ask anyway. Is there any rule for DOF concerning the distance from the closest point focused on & the in focus area behind this point. For example aT f2.8 will only 1m behing this point be in focus & at say F10 will 12m behind this point still be in focus? Or does this differ from lens to lens. I've never really done any kind of test for this. I understand the concept of DOF but not sure if there are any rules or guidelines.
I need to use manual focus for something & prefocus on a point, but not sure what the best way is to get the best results!

Here's a link to a very effective DOF calculator: http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/te ... _calc.html

I use it regularly and it is extremely useful in finding your near and far focal points and well as your hyperfocal distance should you do landscape photo. it's free.

Did you not check the links?

The first takes you to their various styles of print out take with you DoF scales!

Hope that helps.

My link works fine... once on that page, scroll down and click on the hyperlink called "depth of field calculator".

and voila!

OK, presuming you are being serious...

I gave two links, of which you noted 'yeah, but you can't travel with that one!'

I then asked whether you actually checked my links, as the first was indeed to 'ones that you could travel with'. At no time did I mention your links.

I'm sorry... what I meant was that the DOF master was an Online dof calculator as opposed to the Bob Galbaith one which you can put on a portablt device, because otherwise the dof master is a bit simpler to use.
