What happened to medium format?

Post Tue May 15, 2007 4:28 am

I remember ten years ago medium format was the cats meow. I was salivating over getting my hands on a Hasselblad back then. Now it seems like the format is kind of a moot point. I hardly ever hear anyone talking about it anymore, let alone shooting it. So I took the time to look over some medium format photos here on pbase and I'm surprised how completely unimpressed I am. I don't know if it's just bad photos on the photographers part or that digital SLR's have trumped medium format film cameras.

I don't know it just seems like it used to a be a magical format that produced bigger then life images and I just don't get that reaction anymore.

I think it's the price of digital medium format that limits the use, and most pros are probably still using film cameras.
My favourite is http://www.pbase.com/hwatt/transient_light
but he still uses film.
John Fielder is another example, but again he uses film.

MF film is alive and somewhat well, but more and more it's within the pro's realm. There are some good photogs on Pbase that shoot MF, but most of the site is comprised of folks that shoot digital, or digital +.

As already stated it's not in the consumer/prosumer realm for the most part. But it's very much alive and kicking the proverbial

i remember, i could see it in the film......
my first 6x6 chrome in a glass mount. absolutely spiritual!
my first 645 negative that required no more cropping!
my first 6x7 sf portrait. the catch lights were sharp enough to draw blood.

the heavens opened up for my first 4x5 chrome. angels sang.

my first 8x10 chrome... well...

you guys (gilp, dougj...) that know about this stuff know what i mean.

there i go, waxing up again.

as matter of fact....and not to demean myself... I have never shot with a argentic MF, I really only discovered MF about 3years ago with the Leaf Aptus17mp... which I rented for a while befoire I got the 1ds2...back then, the 1ds2 and leaf were the same resolution....so it may little sense to go MF....today, it's a different story!
