Time Exposures with the Nikon D200

Post Sat Jun 02, 2007 5:56 pm

I want to make some long time exposures at night, in the area of 2-hours, using my D200. According to my user's manual the shutter release button has to be held down manually for bulb exposures, but it's unrealistic to do this for one to two hours and, in any event, would result in blurred images caused by camera shake as I held down the button. What am I missing here? I can do 30 second exposures using the self timer, but that's not nearly long enough for this project. Do I need to carry my F5, cable release and slide film along on this trip as well?
Thx
Mike

No, you probably don't need to carry your film gear, but you do have to get a remote release (wired or wireless) for the D200.

See http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d200/d200-long.htm or http://gorillasites.blogspot.com/2007/0 ... -d200.html

The wireless remote release should allow really long exposures in bulb mode, pressing once to open the shutter and a second time to close (that's how it works on a D80, but the D80 limits exposures to 30 minutes).

Note that battery power will be the main limiting factor, as the D200 is reported to deplete an EN-EL3e in under 90 minutes on long exposures.

Thanks very much, that's exactly what I needed to know.
