Why does Canon's EXIF data not transfer the info accurately?

Post Tue Jul 10, 2007 5:26 am

When I post a manually shot photo, it says program.

When I use flash, it says none used.

Why is this?

I have no idea, but it happens to mine too.

'cause Canon use a "custom" EXIF field for some items (ie they say they are using an industry standard then screw around with said standard... par for the course in the IT world but no less annoying for it)

I find LightRoom picks up most of Canons custom EXIF data fine (flash, metering mode, etc.)
there is no .sig

Also, it puts the important ISO information in a non-standard field,
for its point and shoots, and software like Photoshop will wipe even that out.

But if you're a PC user there's a way to get the ISO into the
standard field. (It's important for me to learn from at least.)

See my older note on this at
http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?p= ... iso#187230

For flash info, I just use a good free utility like Irfanview
( http://irfanview.com ) to see info like that and then add it to
the technotes for the pbase image where I used flash)
but the Canon software will see that info of course, though I don't use it.
I don't know why the software PBase is using doesn't pick up flash use
for these smaller cameras.

Irfanview sees the Canon non-standard field for ISO but that won't
help when processing the photo in Photoshop.
