Wide Angle Lenses and Crop Factors

Post Tue Jul 24, 2007 12:10 pm

Hi all, just a quick question..

1. Does a Sigma 10-20mm (or for that matter Canon 10-22mm) at 10mm, equate to 16mm on a Canon 400d (which has a crop factor of 1.6x)?

In other words, does multiplying the focal length in non-full-frame cameras apply to only EF lenses, or to both EF and EF-S lenses?

2. Will 16mm on a full frame body, such as the 5d, equate to the angle of view that the 10mm produces on a 1.6x crop camera.

Any info would be much appreciated :)

Yes, 10mm on a 400D is equivalent to 16mm on a full frame.

If a shot was taken on a 400D using a 10-22 at 10mm and then the same shot with a 5D using a 16-35 mm at 16mm, the field of view would be the same

It's the crop bodies and EFs lenses that replicate the field of view, as full frame came first

What uses having a great depth of field, if there is not an adequate depth of feeling? -
