I got a 21 in. CRT ViewSonic Pro Series p220f. What now?

Do I set it to 6500.

What is the best way to top quality prints now.

I shoot in RAW form and the best color temp. varies from pic to pic.

The pics don't have to all be set at 6500 color temp do they?

Thank you so much for your help.

Are you talking about monitor or picture white balance? For your monitor, I'd recommend getting a calibration tool (run anywhere from $80-$350 or so). For the pictures white balance depends on lighting conditions.
Nikon D300, D200
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, 55mm f/1.4 micro, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G DX, 80-200 f/2.8D
Apple PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro
Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS3

It lets you set the monitor colors to

9300k
6500k
5000k

Which should I use.

I will buy one of the callibraters later but for now...what?

Thanks again.

The best way to calibrate your monitor is with a good quality Colorimiter. I personally use a Colorvision Spyder2 Express - it takes the guesswork out of calibrating your monitor. Anything else is pure luck.

The colorimieter will give you consistent results which can be properly calibrated with your printer.

Color management settings should be for sRGB and the Monitor should be set to 6500. You should still calibrate your monitor for color and gamma.

That's really only for web though.

For lab prints Prolab Express recommends the following:

"Calibration:

Make sure the file you printed was tagged with the "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" color space. We recommend uploading all files tagged with this sRGB profile.
We recommend using a calibration kit from Greytag MacBeth® or Xrite® for the most control over your color.
A Gamma of 2.2 works best for matching photographic prints. After profiling a variety of monitors, we have found that a color temperature of 6500K/white point of D65 works much better than 5000K/D50. In fact, some monitors have a difficult time displaying 5000K/D50 and may turn yellow or show red in the highlights after profiling. If your monitor has an sRGB setting, try that first. Most monitors with this option carry a default setting of Gamma 2.2 at 6500K."

This advise has worked well for me.
