Healthy skin adjustments in CS2

Post Sat Mar 08, 2008 8:22 pm

I am using CS2 to smooth skin imperfections (portraits).
The technique I used, on a new top image layer, is as follows:-

Overlay Mode
Crl+I to invert
Filter:High Pass: around (approx 10 pix)
Filter:Blur:Gaussian Blur (approx 1 px)
Alt_click to add layer mask (filled with black)
Paint brush with white on skin areas to be smoothed.

The problem I notice after this treatment is that whilst the skin is smoothed, the skin has lost it's luster. Instead the smoothed skin looks dry and pasty. The healthy sheen from the original gets removed.

How can I recover the sheen/health look? Or is there a better techniques for skin smoothing and preserving skin vitality?

When I'm doing skin, I just use the blur layer.

Duplicate layer, add gaussian blur until it's really blurred, then drop the opacity until it shows almost clear again. The skin will be soft but will still maintain the lustre.

You can sharpen eyes and stuff separately or sharpen the whole image using unsharp mask. I use the mask option but the softness of the skin is still retained.
