Lighting question - gel intensity

Post Sat Apr 26, 2008 11:16 pm

I've set up a studio as shown below. The softbox and barndoor lights are Alien Bees 1600s and the umbrella and gel lights are Alien Bees 800s. I have the softbox and umbrella set at about 50% power, which gives me best exposure at 100 iso, f/11, 1/60s.

I have wine colored gels on the two lights pointing at a white backdrop. I can't find a good combination that gives me vibrant background color -- it's a faint wine color around the edges with bright white in the center. I've tried settings from maximum down to about 25% power on those lights, and am just not getting the effect I hoped for.

The barn door is high shooting down from top right and the other background light is down low shooting up from bottom left.

Any pointers on using gels like this??

Thanks,
Jeff
