CANNON EOS 40D Help with lens

I AM BORROWING MY MATES CAMERA FOR THE DAY TO TAKE SOME PICTURES AT MY SONS BIRTHDAY PARTY
HE HAS TWO LENS BEING A NOVICE, IT WILL BE ON AUTO, SHALL I TAKE EFS 17-85 OR EF 70-300

No question in my mind 17-85. The 70-300 is going to be too long ( you will not be able to get far enough form the subject, and probably to slow to stop any movement of the subjects.

Now a minor note, would you have the kids release the CAPS LOCK on your computer please? :lol:

2nd vote for the 17-85.The 70-300 is the wrong lens for that use. You'll find the IS really handy, you'll get lots of faces in at 17mm and 85mm is easily enough reach in an indoor situation. Have fun!

Well, if you want to take the pictures from accross the street....than you will need the 300mm lens :)
But i know you are not going to do that, so i also suggest you the standard lens 17-85mm.
