Macro Lens Question

I have a Nikon D80 and a tamron 90mm 2.8 Macro Lens. I am new to macro and don't quite understand one of the functions (or features) of this lens. If I set the F-Stop to 2.8 and focus in or out from my subject, I am curious why the F-Stop changes when shooting in Apperture mode. I have two other lenses and when you set them to a 2.8 or a 7.1, they stay put. The person at the camera store told me "welcome to the world of macro," so I was hoping someone here may be able to explain this better. Thank you.

Macro lenses f/stops are rated at infinity, but with the extra close focusing design of them, what you're seeing is it's "effective f-number" when focused in.


With older designs it's easy to see, since the lens actually expands during focusing. Newer designed lenses react the same due to distance between elements. Think similar to adding a set of extension tubes, as the lens distance from sensor increases you lose light. Some settings read f/stop via the lenses electronic coupling (f/stop is constant), others read light from sensor plane showing the actual f/stop instead. This can vary greatly between bodies, and lenses from various manufactures.
