Colour loss

Post Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:58 am

Hello, most of the time I shoot in RAW with my D80 and then convert to jpg later after tweaking the colour / white balance. I notice that when I use Photoshop and save as a jpeg (for upload to pbase) the colours seem washed out. I know jpeg is a compression system and loss of quality is inevitable but there is quite a significant change, even when saving in the highest quality jpeg. Has anyone any suggestions ?

This is frequently caused by the color space used in the photo, most users have browsers that use sRGB. I suggest you check your workflow, if you are not using sRGB then convert and save a copy of the photo in sRGB for web use.

I agree with Doug. I'd also like to point out that Mac users can get bit by the sRGB thing. Apple computers do color management pretty much throughout the system. Safari, Netscape and Firefox are all color aware browsers on the Mac side. So if you upload a photo in the Adobe RGB colorspace (and keep the color space embedded in the file) the browser will display it fine on a Mac. But if a Windows user looks at it, with a browser that does not manage color, like Internet Explorer, it will look flat and dull. So, despite Mac computers doing well with color, all files should be uploaded in the sRGB color space so that Windows users will see it as you hope they would.

Now, that being said, just the fact that a web browser is displaying a photo makes the image not look as good as it will on your high res monitor. And between jpg compression, pbase sizing and the like, there is always some image quality loss compared to viewing it with a good graphics program. And one more thing, if your monitor is not calibrated you can also get color shifts between various programs and online vs non online.
