Is it worth using the D90 in house processing?

I have just upgraded from the D70 to the D90 and there seems to a fair of in house processing available with the D90. Changing the saturation to vivid is an example that springs to mind. Are these options worth playing around with, I shoot RAW so usually touch up if needed in Photoshop.

Hi Jim,

although I am not familiar with either D70 or D90 I'd say that if you plan to do post it's best to shoot as 'neutral' as possible. You will have to do the raw conversion anyway, so why not adjust saturation at that stage. Adjusting the saturation in your raw converter or later in Photoshop can be done more flexibly than in-camera, e.g. saturate only some colours. You can first get your white balance right and then have a look at the colours.

Just my two....
Best,
Jeroen

If you are shooting NEF (RAW) all those type settings have no effect at all unless you are processing the files with Nikon software (ie Photoshop Camera RAW uses it's own methods of processing NEF files and doesn't use that type of in camera settings at all). If you are using Nikon software AND shooting NEF, knock yourself out playing with those settings, you can change them in software if you don't like the effect. In fact, the easiest way to learn what all those settings do is shoot NEF and then play with the settings in Nikon software and you can see exactly what kind of an effect they have. Then, if you wanted to shoot in jpg you'd know what settings you like and how to set them.
