If you are shooting NEF (RAW) all those type settings have no effect at all unless you are processing the files with Nikon software (ie Photoshop Camera RAW uses it's own methods of processing NEF files and doesn't use that type of in camera settings at all). If you are using Nikon software AND shooting NEF, knock yourself out playing with those settings, you can change them in software if you don't like the effect. In fact, the easiest way to learn what all those settings do is shoot NEF and then play with the settings in Nikon software and you can see exactly what kind of an effect they have. Then, if you wanted to shoot in jpg you'd know what settings you like and how to set them.
