Night shooting

I just got a 50D recently and I would like to try some night shooting, but I can't figure out how to make the shutter stay open for more than 30 seconds. Is there a way to set this up, or is it outside of what I have for right now?

In manual mode rotate the exposure selection to where it says "bulb" in this mode the shuttter stays open until the button is released. A remote switch and a tripod is preferable for long exposures to reduce movement
