Favourite Photographer and why

Post Wed Nov 14, 2007 6:04 pm

Hi guys, just thought it would be interesting to see who your favourite photographers are.

Please give a name, an image and why. I'll start :)

Lara Jade

Image

Lara Jade is a student photographer aged 18. She is beginning to build herself a huge reputation for being s great portrait photographer. She implements the uses of photoshop alongside her work, and I just love her creativity. She's my favourite photographer because she never ceases to intrigue and inspire me, a good photographer, is one who makes you question the image. :)

I'm not sure about who my overall favorite might be, but I'm a big fan of Richard Avedon for portraits:

(Once into the site, choose "Archive," then "Portraits")

I went to her website and she is, indeed, incredibly talented (and still only 18 years old!). I like Steve Pyke for portraits:

and Ed Burtynsky for landscapes:

I like Peter Lik:

Having visited his gallery in The Venetian at Las Vegas, I was hooked. His ability to capture the beauty of the world makes me wish I was able to get out and replicate his work and style. I see his images to be sheer perfection. In his retail galleries, there are veiwing rooms for his images, a definite must if you want to get lost in the scene and feel as though you were actually there taking in the vista.

Galen Rowell is my top pick for landscape & aventure photogrphy. He is dead now but lived a true outdoor adventure photographers life. He has tons of shots & without the help of the digital age & alot of times even without a tripod. He is a great teacher through his many books too, he goes into the meanings & thought process behind his work. Here is a link to his site -

so... for black and white, I like Josef Koudelka Koudelka's style has never been static and his photos always reveal a telling story. His photo of the gypsy man kneeling in front of his "bowing" horse is purely magic. I long to own a print of it.

and for color my all time fav continues to be William Eggleston The modern world of documentary photography owes a great debt to John Szarkowski for freeing us from the likes of his other "find," the problematic, weirdness obsessed Diane Arbus. When Szarkowski insisted that the color photos of Eggleston were worthy as fine art photography he lit a fire that is being fought to this day. I like Eggleston's ability to make his photos about the plain beauty of the everyday scene.

I, like a_zeitler am a big fan of Peter Lik, I have visited his main gallery in Cairns, North Queensland, Australia several times and the absolute quality is astounding. Some of his prints are 2 or 3 metres wide and even when viewing from as close as 10 centimetres you still cannot see any grain!!!!!!

Excellent work, beutiful compositions and breathtaking colours......

it's all personal taste - I don't "get" Peter Lik

I do get Joe Cornish though

Something close to my heart, even though it's US not UK subject matter:
O.Winston Link

You are not wrong about being a matter of taste, the Joe Cornish picture "Chamber of secrets - Antelope Canyon" is like a "happy snap" compared to Peter Lik's "Ghost".....
