Using and Marketing Purchased Photos.

We were going to make some greeting cards and postcards on a small scale and sell them with funny captions on Etsy.com or similar.
But we're confused about the rights of these photos. None of them appears to have been published or mass-produced in anyway. Many just seem like the typical candid photos someone might shoot of friends and family.
Where might we get started figuring out any rights issues about this? Does anyone who reads this forum have an advice they could offer?
