If srijith or users on this forum email a list of the spammers we can block them. We'd probably like to see atleast one of their posts just so we can avoid blocking someone who didn't actually spam. Also, I tried to delete most of the spam I found on here today.

Just a thought Molly but it'd be useful if someone could apply the "report" mod for phpBB2 (which I believe is the base for this forum) so it'd make life easier in terms of reporting it.

At the moment it involves multiple clicks, pages, etc.. to get the relevant user profile (ie: a moderator), copy, paste the offending link... and with multiple spam posts in some instances it does get to be a bit of a mare.

Also, as for the 'report' suggestion, I'd put that in the feature request forum so we can consider that when updating the site.

Why not just allow those who are registered (and paid up) members to post on any forum. That would also get rid of the Nigerian scam which has appeared recently.

Know I'm not Molly but just to offer a little insight based on years of working on forums..

1. A lot of people who become members like to be able to kick the tires and see how it all works before they fork out cash so blocking the "try it and see" aspect of forum involvement might result in potential members not bothering.

2. There's also people, like myself, who aren't directly involved in photography but who have input and interest in related fields, eg: Printing, who would be unwilling to pay for membership. Not to blow my own trumpet but I'd like to think my involvement was useful and others are too so it would reduce the utility of the forum again.


Last point I guess, is that forum spam is endemic now and is becoming more "popular" for spammers. There are a variety of tools and modifications for forums becoming available to reduce this issue and I'd be happy to pass on links to ones I've adopted on my own phpBB2 forums to help cull the bulk of the spammers.

With respect, 12 quid a year is not a lot to shell out to support this site I do appreciate that it might deter a very small amount of would be members if they cannot "try out" the site. I am not suggesting that there should be no trial accounts, just that if you want to ask questions, then you should be a subscriber.

23 bucks US is a drop in the ocean with respect to what photographers (even new ones) spend on their gear. This site has become what it is today through members paying their annual subscriptions and its possibly the best photographic site on the web. When I joined this site over four years ago, the site was a "donation" only - you could either pay or not. I elected to pay a subscription immediately as I felt the need to support it.

Understand what you're saying Sheila, but I guess part of my arguement is that there's more than one way to contribute to a site and that could be through sharing information in a useful way...

Know what you mean though and I fully recognise that "pay up" would reduce spam to virtually nill... At the end of the day it's something for the owners to wring their hands over... Lucky them
