Rendring Intent: Percptual? Relative or Absolute Colormetrc?

Post Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:45 pm

I noticed that Photoshop CS2 allows the ProPhoto RGB colorspace to be
selected for Raw images. It's a larger color space than Adobe RGB, so
I decided to print an image using it. In "print with preview" I selected
let photoshop determine colors, the ProPhoto RGB color space and rendering intent as perceptual. The results were awful. I changed the rendering intent to absolute colormetric and I got a decent print. How do
you decide which rendering intent to use? I just made a wild guess when
I selected absolute colormetric.

Here is a page that describes what the rendering intent tries to do. On the right side list of subjects click on "rendering intents" and it will skip down to the spot on the page where it is discussed.

If you have the profile for your printer you can view (proof) the image prior to printing with each rendering intent and see which treats your images the best.

Thank you for the link. It's going to take a while for me to digest all of it.

Thanks again.

You're welcome. Here's one more link for drycreekphoto that discusses it briefly. It's number 11 about half way down...

Thanks again. I'm going to print these out and do as the last article
suggests -- experiment a little.
