Accurate Colours on Canon ix4000

Can anyone help me obtain accurate colours from my ix4000 printer? My monitor has been calibrated accurately and I am using Canon inks and paper. I find that the printer driver provides several canon profiles to select from, but I gather that these are not printer specific, and certainly do not produce accurate colours. I have coped so far by fiddling with the manual controls on the driver and obtained some passable results, but because these are not proper and applicable profiles I find myself have to adjust them for each different print.
Have others had these problems?

The best you can do is to make a specific printer profile of your combination of printer/ink/paper. For this you need a spectrometer like the Eye1 or, cheaper, ColorMunki. Print a test page, measure it (or have it measured) and build a printer-specific icc profile.
When you have such an icc profile, you should print without colour management by the printer, otherwise you get double corrections...
