Refilling Canon Ink Cartridges?

PostPosted: Mon Nov 29, 2004 5:28 am

Hi,

I am using a Canon i560s printer. I am thinking of going up to an i9900.

My question is does anyone out there have good luck in refilling cartridges for either printer? If so, what brand of refill kit do you use? I just sent off for one to check it out on the i560. If their system works for me, I will probably go to the i9900.

Ink costs are incredible! They should just give the danged printers away IMHO.

I know of no company that sells a bulk setup for the Canon like I have seen for the Epson 2200. That would be a neat solution too.

I appreciate any help,
Ellsworth Weaver

Hi Ellsworth,
I have been using Inkjet Goodies refill kit inks for about 2 years now. I have used them in both my previous Canon S800, and for the past 12-18 months in my Canon i950. Inkjet Goodies does indeed sell a refill kit for the i9900. I have had no problems whatsoever in either of my printers, using the IJG inks,(actually MediaStreet) wonderful prints and color and the cost savings is enormous. Very easy to use too. Here is the link ti the IJG site. Look under products>refill kits. Curt

You might also wish to check out the "Printers and Printing" forum @ Dpreview. Do a search for IJG or InkjetGoodies inks etc. Lots of IJG iks users there:

I've been using an ink refill kit for my i560s sold at Costco for around $17.
Once you get used to doing it, it works very well. I put a piece of scotch tape over the ink head and after drilling the hole with the drill provided, I fill it up (don't use the photo ink provided, wrong color), I have the wife squeeze the sides to provide a negative pressure when I put in the plug. Can get a bit messy untill you work out a routine that works for you. Saves you a ton of money, though.

I am amazed that you are refilling the canon cartridges -they are so fragile and the generics are so cheap. The Costco refill kit is a universal ink kit and it is mostly designed, I thought, for HP and Lexmark cartridges. I've just been getting the vibrantink.com cartridges for $2 or $3 each for my canon i560. We buy the things by the gross and they have very good color performance. I'll spend $30. for 10 or more cartridges. I can't see a difference from the Canon - but whatever.

I have been using the Niagra III system from MediaStreet with my i9900 for about a month. It's a disaster. The system is being sold before it is ready to be marketed. The documentation is terrible. The printer is soaked with ink and I'll be lucky if it's not ruined. Support is not good. At this point I would have to say to beware refilling these cartridges.

I'd highly recommend you take a look at the nifty-stuff forums for anything on the Canon printers, especially when it comes to refilling.

The crew on that forum are very heavily experienced in the Canon area and there are detailed posts on everything from refilling, flushing carts, cleaning waste ink pads, to printhead cleaning.

Hope that helps.. :)

Someone recommended me to try http://www.inkkit.com . Their ink cartridges are actually pretty good. Service is great. Ordered online and received in about 2 days with shipping at $3.95.

Refilling cartridges for i9900

Hi Ellsworth,

I've been refilling ink cartridges for my i9900 and before that for my i9100 with the Media Street Plug-n-Play inks from http://www.inkjetgoodies.com . I use their blank cartridges and replace them after ten refills or one year which ever comes first. I also put a piece of plastic electric tape over the refilling plug for a better seal. As long as I've followed this routine I haven't had any leaks, or clogs.

The inks match up very well when using Kodak professional paper profiles on Kodak pro gloss paper or their Ultima glossy paper. The Ilford smooth gloss profile also works great for the Ilford paper or Kirkland paper from Costco.

I had a Canon ip4200 brilliant, best printer I had, except for the costs of the inks. Did try and use alternatives but you have to take the chips off and I tried this several times without success!! So got rid of it. Have to now put an sos up on my Epson R240 no where near as good.
