I think the first time during a day that you visit the profile page it is slow because it is creating new statistics for you. All the next loads of your profile on that day are fast - next day the first load is slow again. I just loaded mine at it was slow (30 secs) the first time, every refresh since then is super fast.

I and others have proposed to turn off the automatic stat routine and create a link so people have to manually refresh.

regards,

Flemming Bo

Flemming, I wrote a pmail to that effect Sunday to management. I think it's clear
that many do not want stats automated when we go to Profile -- because on that
page are the private pmail, the comments, and the guestbook. Of more interest
to many.

BUT if someone does want stats, the delay between getting to profile page
and clicking on Link would be almost nothing.

I've changed my own pbase bookmark (for my own access) to
http://www.pbase.com/comments
to at least see any gallery comments quickly. I click on profile later
only if I want to see private pmails. Almost never do I want stats
(because statcounter is so good and pbase made that easy for us,
for which I'm still grateful).

It just seems to me that it would save so much unnecessary processing
time if accessing Profile page didn't automatically generate all those stats,
nice as they are. I'm doing my bit :-)

I think you guys are completely wrong. The numbers you see are not calculated on the fly when you open profile page. These numbers are counters, and they are stored as a counters. Counters are calculated when the change happened, not when they accessed. When they accessed (as on profile page) they are just retrieved. Retrieval of the counter is the simplest and fastest operation. It's nothing to do with the problem of loading profile page. The fact that all other pages load slowly just proves that.
Andrys, I do not quite understand why you took this upon yourself to decide for everyone on PBase what they want. If this is the real problem then there should be a poll, which decide who wants what.

I think some of us miss the point of the profile page. I want this to load fast not so much for me but for my viewers who I want to be able to find out about me. So me having favourite links stored directly to comments etc. doesn't help that situation.

For me, my profile and PBase front page have always been slow to load but commenting is also so slow as to make me not bother. Recent changes by Slug have improved the situation from being 'hopeless' to 'nearly useless' - this site for me (I know not everyone) is still significantly slower than Flicker, SmugMug etc.

michaelsv, we might be 'completely wrong' but management did write me back in response
to my pmail questions, saying it was a "great idea" and that they are actually working on it.

What you missed is that they don't just record numbers -- when you call on the profile
page, pbase looks up all those numbers and then they sort images for galleries and
individual images, from all that we have, so we can see which images are the ones
showing interest over the last 3 days and averaged. Then they gather the images and
show us the thumbnail images in the right order.

This is not done when visitors visit your profile page, only when we do, but a number
of us do look at profile pages for many reasons -- guestbook, comments, private pmails,
all in one place. In the meantime, the servers ARE computing the stats for 3 days
in order to fetch images and present them to you, with individual stats for each
image shown for each day and over 3 days. And that is the page with the most
rather-awesome delays.

If you had tried what I suggested, just linking yourself in a bookmark to
http://www.pbase.com/comments you would have seen it is several times
faster than getting to Comments through clicking on Profile page the first time,
a subject of complaints.

My suggestion also included that those of you who want stats calculated
at time of accessing profile could just do that by clicking on the Full Stats
link. I took it upon myself, as you put it, to suggest something and
you can suggest something else instead of carping about user questions
and that we have the audacity to make suggestions. They know their
system well and will decide what might be worthwhile or not.

You know what. Let's wait while they implement this great feature and see will it improve speed or PBase or not. I for one will be happy if so, but I'm almost sure that it won't. We're just guessing. I guess we both did not see original code of PBase, so it's worth not much what we're discussing.

You also probably forgot that even in the beginning of this year all same features worked well and fast. So what you suggesting is basically patching holes by changing functionality, instead of fixing the underlying problem. That will result in the fact that problem will surface again in the different place. That you suggest patch again. And please don't tell me that it's not working slower because the number of images and users on Pbase exponentially grew in the last year, so the servers are not coping with load. If so this is real problem, that has to be solved, not worked around as you suggesting.

Of course PBase management is happy to grab on to this idea, since that means they do not have to fix the real problem and can try to mask them by applying this changes.
Just for your information I suggested to PBase help them to manage their servers remotely for free and help to find the problem, since I have a lot of experience in this, but they even did not bother to reply to me.

Michael.

With all due respect, would you really expect a reply? Any decent sysadmin is not going to let anyone into the guts of their system without an extremely tight contract to make sure all eventualities are covered. Would you visit any website and expect come to away without issues, if the website owner just let anyone onto their servers on the basis of an email offer!!!???

Dave with all due respect, any decent sysadmin/site owner/administrator won't let system run like this and ignore hundreds or may be thousands customers complaining about performance.
Following completely OT and you may ignore it.
If you know the matter, you understand that to find the problem on UNIX or even Windows server in many cases you even do not need superuser/admin access. You need it to make changes, but this is a different story. When vendor support specialist comes to customer office trying to help solve performance problem he's not getting that kind of access either. So far I do not see that Pbase is run on a professional basis, mostly like a home business, so yes I think my offer was appropriate.

Michael.

I'd like to add my comments to this. Sometimes PBase is pretty fast, sometimes horribly slow. But for sure the slow periods have got worse this year, and are more frequent than the quick days.

It is now November 11th. I have been working on several new galleries this week as well as re-organising some others, and it has been like pulling teeth. Gallery Edit pages have taken for ever to load, and reviewing images in galleries has taken forever.

Right now (8:30pm Singapore time, 8:30am East Coast USA) it is taking 12+/- seconds to get from gallery headers to gallery thumbails, 20 seconds+/- from thumbnail to loaded image, and 15 seconds+/- to move to "next" image. Completely unacceptable both for users and for guests (who won't stay long given those times).

I am getting to the point of being embarrassed to tell people to look at my stuff on PBase since any right-minded individual is going to give up looking after about five minutes.

It is a slippery slope PBase is on here - you have a lot of very professional users, and the competition is getting better all the time. Users are going to increasingly talk with their feet if you are not careful. It is pointless spending time on loading up images and arranging galleries and then being loathe to tell people to look at them for fear they will think you an idiot for using the site...

And before anybody asks, this is not a general problem where I am -- most stuff loads lightening fast on my connection -- always has, always does.

November 11, 6:28 am PST, it is very slow to say the least, some of my galleries won't even open, they hang and I get a message saying it can't open. What's up PBASE?

It's been pretty bad. I can't tell the others to look at the newly loaded galleries and get them wait for minutes to see one lousy picture. I'm mad this morning myself.

Well, I can't complain about slowness this morning, because I can't even get into PBase galleries (including my own). I tried from home and work, and can't get anything to come up, except these forum pages.

I suppose they didn't get the problem fixed afterall.

The sad thing is no one says or announces anything at all. It would have been more professional to treat the customers with some kind of a PROBLEM NOTICE!

They need to be in ONE place that is for PBase STATUS, and they can make
one on the top area of News and make it One-Way - we can't comment. Just so
we know they are aware and someone's working on it.

Right now it's come to a standstill. It's not just uploading or editing. It's VIEWING.
