How about a "Text Only" option on comments?

Post Sun Aug 13, 2006 1:26 pm

Like many others, I too am now being hit by dozens of spam comments per day so I've now changed to "Option C". It still means that I'll have to delete the junk but, at least, the spammers won't benefit.

I do have a suggestion for Slug. Could you add an option that automatically rejects comments if they contain a URL link? Most legitimate comments are simply nice words about one's photos - I see little need for a comment to contain a link. Another possibility is an option that converts URLs to text? That way spammers don't benefit but if someone really was interested in the URL they could go there by typing it in manually.

I have not as yet had any spam in my "Gallery comments" but several in my PMs some of these from black listed users, some from reg. users, and others from guests.

I subscribe to a few large forums with a PM service, and have never had problems with them. Maybe they have better filters on their server??

I think its high time that Slug gave us some good protection from this.
I have just renewed my subscription for another year, but if this goes on any longer I will have to have a re-think.

Its up to you Slug.

Here is a new spammer:

How can I get into contact with Pbase team for destroying that count? I received a spam in a message.

alain, just send an email to support@pbase.com. Don't delete the message (if you haven't already), and give them the link to it so they can see it if needed. Hopefully, they can stop them from spamming others. Also, you can add them to your blacklist so they can't post on your site.

Thanks Dang,

It seems I was not alone in this case because the Pbase support already cleaned that count before I get into contact with them.

Regards,

Alain.

Since january 28 i recieve a lot of dumb replies on my photo's.
They were placed by a " guest" and everytime it is the same sentence: ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END

I read the things I can do to avoid this, such as block guests posting, but a lot of my friends are not a member of PBase and they leave comments as guests. So....

Can the admin see who this particularly " guest" is who is apamming my guestbook and perhaps block his IP or email?

Hello all,
I don't know if its the right topic, but I just got strange email on my private mail box - spam or phishing from a first sight - and someone mentioned pbase in it. Here is the main text:
Good Day My Dear friend,
How are you doing today I hope you are fine together with your family members? My warmest regards to them and you in particular. My name is Anta Ngoya, I am 27years old and under graduate student of business management and economic.
I am from Rwanda presently living in Senegal under the custody of United Nations High Commission for refugee my arrival here in Senegal is because of the humanitarian crisis in my country Rwanda some years Ago.
I was opportune to have an access on Internet today, while browsing and searching for a friend then I came across Internet and I found your profile on this site http://www.pbase.com, so I decided to contact you for friendship,
please my dear i will like you to write me back so that i will give you the full explanation of myself and my family, i will like to read from you soon, THANKS
yours friend,
Anta Ngoya,

Very touchy story, isn't it? There were 2 files attached, one jpg with a girl and one gif with some flowers and a heart  . Of course I didnt touch it (in fact I was happy I have iMac, not PC). But the most annoying thing was this link to pbase. Well, for a first time since Im a member (its few years now, I have 2 accounts) I felt a little... hm, not-so-safe-here I would say. I ask google about that Anta Ngoya name and found that this text was classified as spam or phishing on few more forums and message boards.
The first thing I did was to hide my email - it was visible to all because of the wedding occasion, for any close and far family member. Thats the end of the story, I just wonder if you got something similar or maybe you have any suggestion how to avoid this. To hide email address and disable comments is always a good first choice.
M
