New look for root galleries

Post Sat Mar 18, 2006 4:25 pm

Since I arrived to pbase, I faced the problem that many of you have already come across: changing the root gallery looking. I have little knowledge of CSS/HTML so I checked this "HTML and style sheet" forum and found that there was really room for the "impossible". After some work I have came to this, I hope you like it:

http://www.pbase.com/nostromo

HOWTO section
You may notice it is strongly influenced by Oochappan pbase gallery (really nice!):
http://www.pbase.com/oochappan
however, he uses Macromedia flash for the main design and I wanted a fully html-based design. I checked for a compatible solution implementing a slideshow, and I arrived to this page:
http://www.brainerror.net/scripts_js_blendtrans.php
I simplified a bit the javascript functions you can find there and adapted them to the singularities of pbase. To create a page like the one I show you, you need to modify the CSS style sheet and include all the relevant code in the user description of the root gallery. Saving my root gallery to your local hard disk will give you the CSS file and the source code you would need to include. At the begining of the javascript section you can see the links of the images to be shown. You can also modify the slideshow parameters (like transition time and displaying time). I can write a detailed HOWTO if necessary.

I have checked it works fine with IE and Firefox. It should work also with KDE browser. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Nice one! I like the simplicity of how it is presented.

I, too, created a customized root gallery of my own at: http://www.pbase.com/bobot

I have not made up my mind yet if I am done or not (LOL) but it's working fine right now.

Cheer!

Simply amazing Luis!! You have open the door for the next generation of root gallery design. I have not tested your work on different browsers (Guys, Girls, we can help here!) but I think we will have to add a HOW TO to the PBase Wiki.

De verdad muchas felicitaciones. Ojalá puedas explicarnos los detalles de como hacerlo.

I tried it and....

I'm usually competent when it comes to this stuff, but for some reason I've got a huge amount of space at the top of the page, etc.
here's how it looks
http://www.pbase.com/jypsee/extras
I copied your CSS and made a new style sheet with it and then put the script in the user description, what happened??

thanks for any help

Jypsee:
That´s probably a CSS related stuff...

Nostromo:
Could you please tell us what are the steps to reproduce what you have done?

Wauv Luis, that is one the very best root gallery designs I have seen on Pbase! Outstanding work.

I hope a howto will be posted on the Pbase wiki cos this is superb work and I would love to do something like the super html slideshow you have done.

I really like the style and have tried to use it on my page but could not. I do not know much about style sheets and editing them so a good step by step would be great.

Quick question

Post Sat Mar 25, 2006 2:35 am

How you were able to to upload your Java script without PBase stripping the line

<SCRIPT language="JavaScript">

When I try to include Java script in my root gallery, PBase is stripping the <SCRIPT....> line rendering the script to nothing.

Thanks in advance.

Note - you don't have to use all the same size photos :)

Thanks again Luis on the Javascript!
