Well... I have two more months before I update my subscription. Sure
hope that this gets straightened out. If this site begins to look like all
the others... I might as well seek another venue.

srijith how are you able to get your code through without being edited? The code in the source is the same as mine minus the defy part.

If they do block flash I may have to finally get around to building my own Gallery2 site. I bought a domain for it specifically a while back but to be honest i really like pbase, both the site and the people. I just hate being restricted when I am paying money for something. We shall see, maybe I can come up with html site I am happy with.

Opps.. forgot to remove your profile.swf which I used to try things out first. Now that has been removed and only 'defy' remains :)

As for how I did it, please contact me via email (shown in my profile) and I will let you know. As I said, once many people get around the filter, they will rework it to catch them again. Cat and mouse game...

Usually they let it go for as long as someone doesn't abuse the system. Example - use of javascript. I am sure someone must have decided to do something bad with flash too and PBase was forced to do this.

My complaint is that these new filters/developments are never announced in public, creating so much confusion.

Yes what bothers me is I doubt that the people trying to abuse it are paying money. And if they are why don't they just ban those accounts. And of course not allow it in free accounts.

srijith wrote:Yup, PBase is at it again. Knowingly or otherwise they are stripping away all references to 'object' html tag.

Of course there are ways around it but I am sure when people start using these workaround, they will be closed as well.

So what's the conclusion? Do PBASE do it deliberately? it will hard for me to stay with PBASE if it's the case ......

what's the issue

So what's the issue for PBase with people embedding videos?

Although there's been no official response, I'll speculate a bit. There's been a number of sites which have misused the code to embed other things besides video, such as Google Ads along with other types of advertisements. Srijith could answer this much better than myself, but this had me wondering.

I've also encountered being redirected by clicking what appeared to be Pbase links, when trying to view peoples profiles (although I'm not sure this is a connected problem, and might be fixed).

If I recall right, according to the terms of service, Pbase reserves the right to remove any content which they consider offensive, or in bad taste. Recently, I've noticed several posts in Q&T where people have complained about embedded audio files too. So, it might be reaction to these type complaints.
A couple of quick example threads here:

Hello Jeffrey,

An exploit has been discovered and PBase is now stripping the object tag.

Thanks,
Brian
PBase Team

Just got some official word. They are indeed blocking it.

I am not very happy but it is their site they can do what they want. I haven't decided if I will stick around after my credits dry up, but we will see what happens. Like I said earlier it might finally force me to build my own gallery2 site which I have been meaning to do for awhile now.

Now it is the time for me to switch to the other side and say "I don't get it, users..."

PBase never sold itself as a web hosting service which can be used to host websites (which is exactly what some people have tried to do with embedded video and no images). It never said it will support Javascript, embedded objects and so on. What the user have been doing so far were temporary hacks that the PBase guys did not bother disabling because they did not see a problem with it. They were still officially unsupported. As and when they saw exploits or bad usage (ad popups, XSS etc.) they decided to actively disable something which was never supported to begin with.

I don't really see how we can complain about it. Of course we can complain that these developments should have been communicated to use directly than having to discover it like this but who are we kidding. Communication was never PBase's strong point

What bothers me is that so many people have even stopped complaining about PBase's lack of communication...Kathy did try for a time to at least do some basic communication. I've noticed a general drop in forum activity by 'real' members, at least it seems that way. When it gets to the point where people think "what's the use" that somewhat causes me concern. What also concerns me is that PBase was a very sort of creative driven site...but now when people get creative in the presentation of their work...PBase disables it...

The Luis slide show function can be replaced with the supported version which admin quickly responded to fixing for this reason. There's a long thread in the News forum which should help here: http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=32091

Since it's supported, it shouldn't be disabled after installation.
