Optimal gallery size & number of galleries?

My galleries are in need of some re-organisation.

Does anyone know, or have an inkling for what the optimal gallery size is (number of images), from the perspective of viewers? Personally, I don't like galleries with only a few pictures, nor do I like hundreds (overwhelming!). I don't particularly like too many nested galleries either. I'm trying to find that balance between sufficient interest to keep people clicking, and ease of navigation.

Any pointers or suggestion (or direction to other threads covering this) would be gratefully recieved.
