Own URL

Post Wed Apr 09, 2008 6:35 pm

I notice a number of pbasers have their own url instead of the usual http://www.pbase.com/ yet the galleries look like they are in pbase. How is this done??
Secondly, a number of people (Gurus, Dang and Flemming included!!) have a front page that doesn't look like a pbase gallery. Is this hosted on pbase or elsewhere?
Any help appreciated!!

Chuckle... last thing I am is a Guru, believe me! I only do simple things I learn from others.

Having your own url is simple. Register a domain, and then forward the URL via the domain "control panel" to your galleries on Pbase.
Nothing to it.

Thanks Dang - but I still have 2 points:
1) I understand that the url you buy can point the web surfer to pbase but why does it not change to the pbase url when the surfer gets there
2) What about your front page - how did you do that? Is it the root gallery page redone using CSSs.
Thanks for your hekp in advance!

Hi Steve!

1) - This is done by using frames instead of just URL redirect. A URL redirect is what I use and like the best, I don't like frames. If you go to http://www.flemmingbojensen.com it simply redirects to my Pbase URL and changes the URL in the browser address bar.
If you want your URL to stay in the browser, this can be tricked by using frames. Now, your domain admin tool, whatever it is called, DNS manager perhaps, must have an option for using either redirect or using a frame solution.

2) My front page is my Pbase root gallery! It's just hacked as much as possible :D Really simple, it's just a root page with one gallery. The thumbnail of this gallery is then hidden in css so my entire root front page is blank and then built by css and by html in the description. And then I hide the top menu etc. so I can have a totally customized front page - love that this is possible!!!!

EDIT: Forgot to add - the front page has it's very own css, is not used anywhere else on my gallery. This enables me to totally customize the front page. My purchase pages, profile pages etc are done the same way.

EDIT: I'm no guru either but have spent enough time doing css and html on Pbase that I've picked up a few things here and there :)

regards,

Flemming

Flemming - again fantastic. I totally understand that. I've already got my url and masked it to reach my pbase galleries. Now I'm going to try and build a front page. Thanks man that means a lot!!!

Mine is just simple "domain forwarding" also, and there wasn't another option that I recall.
That's not meant to contradict what Flemming is saying, just that it's so easy, if I can do it anyone can.

I'm sure some dns providers only gives you the option of redirect and not the frame option as well and some others give you both options.

Christina, glad I could help and happy you like my galleries!

I am not sure of that Tom. I think you are using frames to prevent the URL from changing to Pbase.com. This is the reason why when one clicks on, say, your Insect Photos link, the URL in the address bar does not change from http://www.dangphoto.net/

Another way to do this (without using frames) is to use what is called Domain Masking or Domain Cloaking. Some of the registrars provide this service for free.

If you have your own own website hosting along with domain, you can play around with Apache ReDirects to get better results. But this might involved some heavy duty hacking.

Srijith,
If it's using frames, GoDaddy must have set it up. When I first redirected, the url did indeed change, and I first noticed it didn't after a few weeks.
One thing that I've noticed (which I'm not sure I like), it doesn't allow you to see the referring url in stats, since it IS the referring url. And since Google
indexes both, the Pbase url gets higher rankings.

On a side note, since Pbase doesn't use sub-domains, Google can't verify site ownership. I'm thinking of contacting them (Google) asking if it can be done manually, since they offer so many great services for owners. This was one of the primary reasons I registered a domain, but... Now I'm considering removing redirect totally.
Has anyone found a work around for this?

Thanks!

Hi,

My domain name also doesn't change to Pbase and I don't remember doing anything specific either. Just specified that http://www.incredibleindiaphotos.com should be directed to my pbase gallery.

I'll look up my registrar and see why..

Thanks
Karthik

Tom and Karthik, your domain name hosts are both using a frame to do redirect which is why your url's do not change.
