A banner/slideshow problem I'm stuck on!

Post Wed Sep 17, 2008 2:56 pm

.. which is probably easily solved, but my html knowledge (which was never that good to start with) has deserted me.

How do I display the slideshow on the left, with banner picture next to it on the right, with the blurb underneath it? I've seen similar in other people's galleries (something like Jypsee's). I've tried looking through the Wiki and searched the forum but I can't see an answer.

This is the gallery of mine in question

Thanks in advance.

It's just a simple table set up, here's the way it's coded.
The top image is a banner, which can be used or not. Add your name & Image Number.
Remove the ******** and everything in between with it, and add the slide show code.
Everything else is just paragraphs, and email link, add as wanted. The tr & td designates table areas, and should be left.

Code: Select all

<center><img src="http://www.pbase.com/YOUR NAME HERE/image/12345678.jpg"> </center>
<br>
<center><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="80%">

     <tbody><tr>
          <td align="left" valign="top" width="400">

  *************************************************************************
    THE OFFICIAL PBASE SLIDESHOW  GOES HERE
    Learn how to make a slideshow for your own galleries:
    http://www.pbase.com/help/slideshow
  *************************************************************************

</td>
          <td align="right" valign="top" width="600"><b>
<p>Your Welcome Text Goes Here </p>

<p>More Text Here, such as: Please email me <a href="mailto:YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS HERE">HERE</a> </p>

<p> More Text if you want, if not just remove the paragraphs </p>

<p> More Text if you want here </p>

</td>     </tr>
</tbody></table>
<br>

If you're not using Firefox Browser with it's Web Developer Tool Bar, you should!
Check the easy "how to" written by Arjun with links to get it here: http://form.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13408

On... you mean you have 2 user names, because I only have one. Had me scratching my head for a moment.
But credit needs to go to Arjun, Srijith, Matias, Olaf, Luis, Flemming and others around Pbase... since what I've learned came from them.
Just trying to help pass it on. :wink: Believe me, if I can figure this stuff out anyone can!

I've now got another problem which is driving me mad - I've tried using WebDev, but I just can't figure out what line on the stylesheet to alter

For most of the galleries, I ONLY want a slideshow and text, and can get round the not having any thumbnails either by posting a picture that looks like part of the page, or a 1px white space, which people won't realise is a thumbnail... BUT I can't seem to work out how to get rid of the text that says "click on thumbnails for full image".

help!

thanks!

Hi Fran,
Can you give me the link to a specific gallery, and I'll take a quick look. When checking your "Pets" gallery, it's not visible.
Oh... and you might want to remove some of the excess text on your "root" page:

"Your Welcome Text Goes Here

Please contact me to discuss

text test texty text

te3xt test texty text "

Oh I know the text isn't written yet :D - it's just a filler for now until I think up something clever!

Weirdly, the problem seems to have resolved itself now! I'm not quite sure what I did - there WAS a link saying ""click on thumbnails for full image". Unless I imagined it.

Thanks anyway! Right, am off to see if I can work out how to move the galleries links to the right, and make the grey bits red... I may be back.

Great!
It was probably still held in your cache, and cleared when you reloaded, happens sometimes. It's coming together nicely now, good work!

EDIT: Oops! Fran, when viewing in Internet explorer the link is indeed showing. Also, the links you've created below the show are difficult to click. If you've set up a table (which I assume) somethings a bit odd. It might be best to move it above the slides, and try one in this form instead, which gives a better "clickable" area:

Code: Select all
<center><table border="0" cellspacing="2" width="60%">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td><a href="http://URL GOES HERE/"><font color="black"><center><strong>GALLERY NAME HERE</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://www.URL GOES HERE"><font color="black"><center><strong>GALLERY NAME HERE</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://url"><font color="black"><center><strong>GALLERY NAME HERE</strong><center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://url"><font color="black"><center><strong>GALLERY NAME HERE</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="url"><font color="black"><center><strong>GALLERY NAME HERE</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://homepage"><font color="black"><center><strong>GALLERY NAME HERE</strong></center></font></a> </td></tr></tbody></table></center><br>

You can change the border to show by adding a 1 (or other number), and increase general area of link with the cellspacing. :wink:

I need to go for now, but I'll have another look a little later and see how it's going. IE's a real pain!

Oh bugger, just when I thought I had it right! What I've done is redirect my domain name to a page I've called 'home', and then hopefully hidden everything apart from the three other galleries. I don't want anything at all to be clickable except the thumbnails in the 'prints' gallery, and the home/portraits/pets/prints link line above the banner. So, at the moment if you get to the gallery via http://www.franpurdy.com it should be about right. I'm just going to check in IE as well.

I'm not sure I completely understand changing the table, but I'll give it a go later if the above doesn't work in IE!

thanks again!

eta: Yuck, it looks awful in IE :cry: AND it's now showing "click on thumbnails for full image" again in Firefox. I might have rethink the whole 'no thumbs' idea.

Okay..
It's looking good via the redirect link in Firefox, haven't checked with IE since you said you were. All links seem to be fine, but the overall table width seems a bit wide. If you changed the width, you might bring it back down a bit so the page will appear more compact. While it's probably fine with small screed resolutions, once you get up to 1280 (as I'm running) and above, the words become quiet stretched, and lose their paragraph.

You might also re-proof.
Might be due to our being across the pond from each other. :) Be sure and check structure several times, especially since your wanting a professional appearance. For personal sites, it's not nearly as important.

You mentioned redirecting... are you redirecting to Pbase, or pulling from Pbase to your url? It's showing the Pbase url for me. This might be phrased differently with the domain name register you've used, but with mine I can "mask" the url so my domain name is maintained through pages. It's not 100% effective, but pretty close, as you can see: http://www.dangphoto.net

The difference might be you're linking the Pbase galleries to your url, then there's no mask available that I'm aware of. The only way to avoid it would be to have a complete "online" site: http://www.dangphoto.info

I'm still learning this stuff too, so it's still a bit confusing.

Now for the thumbs link, there should be several ways around that, so don't give up! Give me a bit to think, and have a look. :wink:
EDIT:
Oh... I see you've already added thumbs back, so I can't view the code.

Aargh!

Firstly, thanks for the comments on the text - that'll be easy to deal with, it was really just thrown in to see if it worked ok, I obviously need to proof read it and correct all the stupid typos. THAT I can deal with! The client area will have some passworded galleries in. In fact I might go and do that now so I know it looks ok, as so you know what I mean.

As for the rest of it... I'm flumoxed. I really am a novice at this, and can see what's wrong, but even with your marvellous help I can't really understand how to fix it, or even how to explain myself!

I haven't added any thumbnails back in anywhere. It looks different every time I look at it, without me making any changes at all. It's quite bizarre.

The redirection thing - I'm a bit lost with the differences, but I think if I'm understanding correctly I'm redirecting TO pbase (forwarding?) I know the url isn't masked, but I'm not too bothered about that, for now.

In IE the top of the photographs in the slide show are chopped off at the top - am I right in presuming I need to increase the table size? Oh, but I've just seen you said to decrease it. I used the code from your top post in this thread.

Hum, lets think a second.
Increasing the table width doesn't affect it's height. So, you'll need to add a couple of breaks, or empty paragraphs between the slide & banner for breathing room. Simple enough for the last question. Now....

I'm not sure whats going on at the moment, but I'm having pages load very slow for awhile, then all seems well. So they might working on things which is causing part of the problem. For some reason, I can't duplicate the "click thumbnails to enlarge" within my galleries, regardless of what sheet I use. And, I can't view it in yours, and last look the thumbs are gone again. Enough to drive a person buggers, no doubt!

Here's what I suggest, since it's showing up for you at times:

1. Using Firefox, view the page and click the "Information" link in the web dev bar.
2. Go down in the drop down menu and look for "Display ID & Class Details", and click it.

This will show you the labels used for every section/link on the page. Look at the link and note it's identification. Then look at the Pbase CSS (not what you've added on top of it) for the named area. Copy, and paste it here.

Most times you'll find something like:
Code: Select all
#slideshow_title
{
  display:inline;

Whats done then, is to add the same code into your new CSS but changing the "display" to none (for example), or similar altering. It's not difficult, I just can't see it! I'll try to recall myself, but so far I can't remember squat. Sometimes it the easiest things that seem a problem.

Lately, yes... if you're redirecting to here, you should be able to use masking to keep the url as your domain name. Just thought I'd mention it since you'd said you were redirecting. No problem. :wink:

EDIT:
Sorry, didn't catch this sooner, I Think I see what going on now!
You've modified the "Luis" style sheet CSS, and then adding additional tables on top of the ones in the CSS. Wish I'd caught it before hand, I thought you were just adding code to a standard sheet. You might need to make a different sheet for your "Root" gallery and one for all the other galleries because the basic PBase coding varies.

For the root gallery, I'm guessing now...
It looks like you've added a "links" table, but I can't remove it with my editor, since I can't see the actual code. So, copy it for backup and then remove all the code in the description area. Then, copy and paste this as a replacement:
Code: Select all
<center><img src="http://www.pbase.com/franpurdy/image/103275370/original.jpg"> </center>
<br><br><br><br>
<center><table border="0" cellspacing="4" width="70%">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td><a href="http://www.pbase.com/franpurdy"><font color="#186829"><center><strong>:: Home ::</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://www.pbase.com/franpurdy/portraits"><font color="#186829"><center><strong>:: Portraits ::</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://www.pbase.com/franpurdy/pets"><font color="#186829"><center><strong>:: Pets ::</strong><center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://www.pbase.com/franpurdy/prints"><font color="#186829"><center><strong>:: Prints ::</strong></center></font>
</a></td><td><a href="http://www.pbase.com/franpurdy/client_area"><font color="#186829"><center><strong>:: Client Area ::</strong></center></font></a> </td></tr>
</tbody></table></center>
<br><br><br>
<center><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="80%">

     <tbody><tr>
          <td align="left" valign="top" width="400">
   SLIDESHOW(prints, size=medium, delay=3, loop=yes)

</td>
          <td align="right" valign="top" width="600"><b>
<br><br><p align="left"> Photography has always been my passion.  I was fortunate enough to study photography full time back in the 80's, before digital cameras were even dreamt of, and learnt how to develop photographs using smelly chemicals in dark rooms!</p>

<p align="left">These days I use a Nikon D300, and process my images using Photoshop, but the thrill is still the same.  Last year I was a finalist in The Daily Telegraph's 'Our Lives' photography competition, selected from over 50,000 entrants.  This year I've been awarded membership of the Royal Photographic Society, and have made my mother proud by putting letters after my name (even if she doesn't know what they stand for!)</p>
<p align="left">I am now taking bookings for human and pet portraits, and commissions for any other genre of photography; be it food, fashion or the occasional wedding.</p>

<p align="left">Please <a href="mailto:fran@franpurdy.com">CONTACT ME</a> to discuss your ideas.</p>
</td>     </tr>
</tbody></table><p><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br></p>

Next, you might want to remove the Luis section from your CSS for the Root Gallery, as below, but check to see if it works first:

This would be what you'd remove in your CSS if need be:
Code: Select all
}
TABLE.luis {
   BORDER-RIGHT: 0px; BORDER-TOP: 0px; MARGIN-TOP: 0px; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0px;
    FONT: 12px verdana, arial, sans-serif; BORDER-LEFT: 0px;
     COLOR:  #186829; BORDER-BOTTOM: 0px

Again, copy for backup just in case.

Lastly (until we see how this goes anyway) If you want the green color to display in the text are, you can click "verbalize" in the CSS and change the blue# to the same green, or something close.

I still haven't been able to get the troublesome link to display so I can find it. So, if you see it again, find it's ID. :wink:
I'm done for the night. :) Hope this helps, and since it's using html instead of depending on CSS, it should be editable to work in root & galleries too. You can move the links above or below either section, since it's all broken into separate code.

Hooray for Dang! Next time you're in London beers are on me!

I haven't tried anything yet - I've been out all day today, and it's late now so I have to sleeeeeeep, but as soon as I'm awake again in the morning I'll give it another go. It's not a standard sheet - in fact it's one I found browsing around, and I'm not even sure I remember where I picked it up from now. I'll try to find it again, as it'll probably help you see what I did.
