Changing Root Gallery

Post Tue Dec 02, 2008 9:34 am

First, I want to thank you everyone here for the inspiration you've given me through your posts in my attempt to change the "theme" of my galleries. I came to the Forum about a week ago looking for an answer to a simple question and the topics intrigued me. I had no idea there were so many possibilities for galleries! Before I knew it, I was spending long hours (actually days!) browsing through various galleries for ideas in formatting a new stylesheet. I started with only a basic knowledge of HTML, had no knowledge of CSS and even though I'm no whiz at it yet, I've managed to create something that's close to what I want!

My question...how do I change my root gallery? I've created a new gallery which I want to use for my root gallery. http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery/home. I've copied all the sub galleries of my original root gallery into the new gallery and marked the old root gallery "non public". If I'm correct in what I've read, I now need to rename my "new" gallery as the root gallery and delete the old root gallery? I'm just paranoid after all the work I've done that I'll do something wrong at this point and need someone to confirm that I'm on the right track :?

One more question, how do I change the size of the font in the message box to the right of my slideshow? I've gone to my stylesheet and increased the size with no results. If I insert (font size="3" or "+1", for example), the font size does increase but it formats incorrectly - i.e. the text shows as a column instead of filling the message box?

Any help would be most appreciated for this CSS newbie!

Hi !

You can't change your root gallery, so what you need to do is copy everything from your 'home' gallery back to root. It's the only way, the root is always the root so to speak you cannot set another gallery as root gallery.

I had a look at your html and css. The html you should 'clean up' a bit as it's a bit messy at the moment. You have copied too much html into the user description, you should delete all of this:

Code: Select all
<html lang="en-US"><head>
<title>slideshow Photo Gallery by Rick's Custom Nursery at pbase.com</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://i.pbase.com/styles/gallery2.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://css.pbase.com/styles/116893.css?t=1228126318">
<base href="http://www.pbase.com">

<!-- BEGIN user desc -->
<html lang="en-US"><head>
<title>slideshow Photo Gallery by Rick's Custom Nursery at pbase.com</title>

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://i.pbase.com/styles/gallery2.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://css.pbase.com/styles/116780.css?t=1227978663">
<base href="http://www.pbase.com">

<!-- END menu bar -->

<DIV id="page-1">

<DIV id="page-1">
<DIV class="galleryheader" style="width: 911; height: 500">
<!-- BEGIN user desc -->

So that your user description begins with this line

Code: Select all
<table align="top" width="900" border="2" cellspacing="3" cellpadding="3" height="1">

Then to change the font size, simply locate the P class in your css and increase font size from where it says 14px to say 15px or whatevery you like.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Flemming

Thank you so much! Your numerous posts on other threads have been a tremendous help to me as well as your help here :D
I've hidden the new gallery again so I can continue to tweak it, but you've solved my problem and now all I have to do is get it "right". I really appreciate your help and prompt reply. Even though I haven't commented on most of the galleries, I have to say yours is outstanding - stunning photos, excellent stylesheet, etc., etc. We've got a long way to go with our photography skills but we DO know how to grow plants! :mrgreen:

Thanks again,
Debbie

Help!!! I've got one more problem :( I took the plunge and finally copied my stylesheet to my root gallery. Everything looks okay, but all of my galleries are showing up below the thumbnail images I created. Is it possible to "hide" the galleries as well as the information on the bottom of the page, i.e. "previous page, pages 1, 2, ALL, next page" ?

http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery

Thank you for any help in solving what will hopefully be my last problem.

Debbie

Later: I think I've almost got it - used instructions found from Matias (thank you!) and moved all galleries into a "secondary" root gallery. I now need to upload an image with the background color to set as representative. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works!

Sorry, I wasn't aware you didn't actually want the galleries on the front page, you wanted a totally custom root page.

But I see you're fairly close to solving your problem - except you can't upload images to root only galleries can exist in root.
So to avoid the "this gallery is empty" you need a gallery in root. You can two one of two things:

1) Create a gallery, call it trash or whatever and upload a 1x1 pixel image to this image with the same colour as the root page background.

2) Create a separate css just for the root page and simply hide all thumbs from the root page.

Hope this helps, if not let me know and I'll look into it.

best regards,

Flemming

I'm back with a few more questions. I've left this alone for a few weeks and now returning realize I still have more to work on :( I still haven't resolved the problem with "This Gallery is Empty" on my root gallery but I'm not as concerned with that as I am with one other problem.

I've searched through the forum threads, viewed sources for MANY galleries and still haven't been able to figure this out. I'll try to be specific in what I'm trying to accomplish and hope I won't lose you!

I found information in the forum which will accomplish hiding the entire header, but I would like to ONLY hide "home" after "All Galleries" is shown in the .treepath: http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery/perennials. I want to direct visitors back to my root gallery instead of directing them to my "home" gallery. My main reason for doing this is it seems like I've done something (I'm not sure what?) when I changed my root gallery and copied all files from my "main" gallery to my new "home" gallery. Now when you click on the subgalleries in the Perennials gallery, my .treepath shows "main" (which is now non-public) instead of "home"?? http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery/perennials_a__b

Is there any easy solution for this?

Debbie

Hello Debbie,

You can't hide just the link "Home" - it's part of your gallery structure.

It appears you have a sub gallery below root called Home and all your galleries are in this "Home" gallery - correct ?

What you could do is move all your galleries back to the root gallery and then simply hide all the traditional thumbnails on the root gallery (as you are displaying these using html, and not letting Pbase display it). You need to create your own thumbnail class and then hide the one Pbase is using.

Oh brother I think I've created a monster!

It appears you have a sub gallery below root called Home and all your galleries are in this "Home" gallery - correct ?

Yes, it's been several weeks since I first worked on this, but I believe the reason for doing this was to "hide" the galleries on my root page so the thumbnails for each gallery wouldn't show?

Basically, I have the "Home" gallery with those I want to be viewed and a "Main" gallery which duplicates those in the Home gallery as well as images/galleries I've been playing with. I didn't dare actually delete the MAIN gallery until I knew everything was working!

I can live with the fact that visitors will be directed to the Home gallery, I will just need to change the stylesheet. What's happening is...some of the galleries I've included in the new Home gallery have sub galleries, specifically:
http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery/heucheras
http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery/perennials
http://www.pbase.com/rickscustomnursery/trees_shrubs

When you click on each of the sub galleries in these galleries, the top of the page reads:

"Rick's Custom Nursery | profile | all galleries >> main >> Heuchera, Heucherella & Tiarella from Rick's Custom Nursery", etc.

Every other gallery which includes ONLY images (no sub galleries) is fine - it directs visitors to the HOME gallery. I can deal with that, I just need to switch my stylesheet for the HOME gallery. What I NEED is to always direct visitors to the HOME gallery, especially for the sub galleries, otherwise they'll arrive at the MAIN gallery and be confused because it's a private gallery and there's nothing for them to see!

I am so confused :? I'm not sure but maybe when I copied the galleries from MAIN over to HOME, I missed something?

Needless to say, I'm obsessed with getting this right! If all goes well, I'll be off and running with an attempt to change my profile page and tweak the CSS of a few of the other galleries :twisted:

Flemming, you've been extremely helpful and I hope you or someone else can help me figure this out!

Thank you,

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

It's getting confusing, I agree :)

A subgallery can only exist in one gallery, cannot be a submember to two galleries. So subgalleries to "Home" should keep their path to Home when you browse them, not switch to "Main". I agree it looks weird.

Try this: Draw a tree structure or make a list of your galleries then post it here, so we can try and make sense of it all :)

Edit these galleries one by one and write down:

Root - which galleries are in root
Home - which galleries are in Home
Main - which galleries are in Main

best regards,

Hi Flemming,

I never thought to look at my "tree" to figure this out. When I did, it gave me a headache! I've made so many changes in the past month, duplicating galleries, etc. just in case I messed up somehow and deleted images from one gallery I wanted to make sure they still lived in another gallery - what a mess :( Anyhow, after a lengthy investigation, I was finally able to solve my problem and the sub-galleries I was having trouble with FINALLY live in the right gallery :D Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. Now I can enjoy the holiday!

Happy Holidays,
Debbie
