Help needed with CSS

First you have to take look here: http://www.pbase.com/tvw
1. As you can see there are still ugly black parts around my thumbnails. How can I remove these without deleting the text below the gallery.
2. What I VERY much like is when you hover over a gallery or photo it is highlighted. I would love to know how to accomplish this. I hope you want to share that magic.
