Help with banner at top of page

Post Fri Feb 11, 2011 5:14 am

I have a graphics logo for my site with the code listed below.

<center> <img scr="http://www.pbase.com/forrestpics/image/132114184/original.jpg"></center>
I made the graphic and placed it in a private folder. I opened the folder - clicked on the photo and copied the URL from the photo(graphics image) selected. I then went to the gallery root and tried to place this in the description as listed above.

When I paste this in the description it will not load the file.
I'm presently directing my logo file back to my main hosting site (not PBase) site and it works fine.
I'd really like to contain all my graphics on the PBase server and figure out what I doing wrong.

Can anyone give me any suggestions?

The present site is http://www.pbase.com/forrestpics

Hello!
Two possible reasons for that come to my mind.
1) The picture of your graphic logo is non-public, that is not only you stored it in a non-public –gallery
(which would not create any problem in this case), but you also selected for the picture the non-public option.

2) Among the options accessible from your profile page, edit your account settingsoptions,
you’ll find also “enable direct linking”, you have to check this case to be able to link directly to one of your pictures on PBase,
if the case is unchecked this can be the reason for your problem with the banner.

I hope it can help

Thanks Marisa for the suggestions. I checked all you suggested and I had everything correct.
The graphic image is in a non-public folder, but the graphic itself is not non-public.
checked the and made sure I had the box to enable direct linking.
I still get no result. Am I missing something else here?

The copied URL for the graphic is working perfect from the PBase URL if I just paste it in the URL line on the browser.

Thanks a lot for taking time to help me. You obviously have had more experience than me. You have a very impresive PBase site as well.

Hello Tom,
I have tried to use your graphic banner in one of my galleries which I have created as test on purpose.
Please have a look

http://www.pbase.com/mardoli/forrest_test

It works fine for me
So theortetically it should work also for you.

So let me see...did you check in edit mode the case "check if using html in the description" ?
Maybe it might depend on that.
In case the problem keeps on for you, we'll try something else.

Have a nice day

Marisa

PS
Thank you for your kind words on my pages.

Ah maybe I have found…there is a typo in your HTLM command!
You wrote
Code: Select all
<center> <img scr="http://www.pbase.com/forrestpics/image/132114184/original.jpg"></center>

While the right command should be
Code: Select all
<center><img src="http://www.pbase.com/forrestpics/image/132114184/original.jpg"></center>

Just a little typo...which makes all the difference.
Please try to correct it, it should work then.

Marisa,

Thanks so much for helping.
Your correction was what I missed was it and it now works correctly. You can look at the HTML for hours and not see your own mistakes. :D You were a great help. Thank You !

Best regards,
Tom

Hi guys, more help on this if possible please.

I copied this link to my discription and changed the specifics to my image after saving though it displays a little white box stating " direct linking deniged" any ideas?

Cheers,

Dave.

Please, Dave, check in the settings in your profile page. Click on “edit your account settings” and then “options” and when you are there be sure that the direct linking is enabled by clicking in the case.
Maybe your problem depends on that, if it doesn’t work let me know, we’ll try to find the solution.

PS
It’s also possible that the picture you try to link to is not a public one or it’s into a password protected gallery, please check these possibilities too.
The picture must be publicly visible, it can be into a not public gallery, but it must be publicly visible and the gallery must not be password protected.

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!

I followed your advice, the latter part about a public pic in a private gallery were ok. The initial suggestion you gave where I had to alter my account settings I changed but it still didnt work. I then went in to root gallery and ticked the 'HTML flag' box - at this point it worked - I had my banner!! Then it disappeared without me changing anything!! I think I'm too old for all this techno stuff.....any further advice?

Marisa, thanks so much for taking the time !

Cheers

Dave.

I can see you banner perfectly now at the top of your root gallery, Dave.
What is the problem?

Post Sat Mar 03, 2012 1:23 pm

Hello Emily I wonder if you could help me yet again. I have two links / logos to a birdwatching webring on my root gallery page. Although I have written <center> on both logos they do not line up. i wondererd if you could help me do that or more honestly do it for me? I would like them side by side if at all possible if not where they are now but central to the page?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Dave.

Please, can I re-visit this topic?

Still having issues loading a banner from a hidden gallery. (You will see my banner is currently loading from a visible page as all I get from the hidden gallery is the white box with "Password protected image"

OK ... I have read over n over the discussion above. It seems that there have been some (minor) changes with the site so in some cases I have had to interpret the advice which in some cases is over a year old.

Let me list the boxes I have checked to keep this as painless (and brief) as possible:

Home Page http://www.pbase.com/slphoto Settings:

html flag check if using html in the description. uncheck for automatic formatting CHECKED

password protection Select Existing Passkey pulldown chosen

ADVANCED GALLERY SETTINGS:

Enable Direct Linking - ENABLED
Locked Gallery Image - PASSWORD PROTECTED selected

Is the issue to do with Passkeys, I wonder? Have Password Protection set to :Select Existing Passkey"

Hidden Gallery Page:

html flag: check if using html in the description. uncheck for automatic formatting UNCHECKED. Have tried both settings . Makes little difference except graphic changes to the tiny broken graphic icon.
public gallery this gallery can be viewed by anyone UNCHECKED
password protection -SELECT EXISTING PASSKEY chosen

In the EDIT the image I wish to use as my banner in the hidden Gallery I have checked the This image is publicly viewable box

Would appreciate an expert eye cast over this. It's driving me CRAZY

Many thanks,
Mark!

Well, Mark the point is that you cannot link an image which is in a password protected gallery.
You should create a gallery, which is NOT password protected but simply invisible and to stock the images you want to use as decoration there, then you can link to them and they are visible.
Create a gallery and in edit mode uncheck the case” Public gallery” in order to have a blank case where it’s written “ this gallery can be viewed by anyone”, but it must not be a password protected gallery, then you upload there the pictures you want use for your banners, but be sure that the picture are publicly visible.
I mean the gallery is invisible and it contains visible pictures.
Then you can link to them and your banner is visible without troubles.
I hope it make sense.
It’s easy to do, but difficult for me to explain properly in English.

Many thanks Marisa. You explained it beautifully! Computers can be annoying when you cannot see the obvious ... but always logical! Thanks for making the effort.

Yes, had it fixed in a giffy (vernacular meaning "a moment") thanks to you pointing out the bleeding obvious. What's the saying? .. couldn't see the wood for the trees!
