to answer kriskringle's question about terminology: where i live in the united states, there is a subpopulation of "bludgers" called "gutterpunks" these are generally young, well educated kids (teens/twenties) who choose to live on the streets in spite of ample opportunity for work, further education, etc. it's a lifestyle choice, they say.

to each his own.

generally gutterpunks eschew support by the government--a worthwhile distinction from the other dole-collecting bludgers out there.
