Identifying Fish

Post Thu Apr 01, 2004 3:05 am

Is anyone good at identifying salt water fish? I have a few fish that I need common &/or scientific names for.

Thanks in advance

Your gallery seems pretty complete. Alot of the unnamed fish actually are identified when you click on the thumnail. I left some comments on several of the others.

Thanks for the ones you posted.
Ones like these I have no clue:

Anemone I don't have a name for either.

I know that 27464617 is one of the damsels, and possibly 27464235, its definately not a wrasse. Since I work on the road I dont have my extensive fish ID library on hand. Im sure I can positively identify all three this weekend.

OK, all three have been positively identified using my Axelrod & Burgess atlas.

I have Dr. Burgess's Mini-Atlas. I was looking at the French Grunt
(Haemulon flavolinaetum) & noticed that it had 2 brown lines going across the body, one along the lateral line & another more toward the dorsal fin. That is why I had dismissed it. Perhaps in captivity they loose that line, or it may even be gender related?

As far as the Ambon Damsel (Pomacentrus amboinensis), there was no mention of that. I thought it was either some type of damsel or angel. Almost reminds me of a yellow lemonpeel.

The Fairy Basslets (Pseudanthias hutchi) is actually in my book, I missed that because of the angle I took the fish pic. It is kind of misleading without a full side view.
